Voters give Labor nod on economy

26/08/2007 10:00:00 AM.  | Stephen Spencer

The Howard Government's re-election chances have been dealt a major blow, with a new poll finding voters believe Labor is better able to manage the economy.

The Government has traditional enjoyed a massive lead over Labor on who is best able to manage the economy.

But an IPSOS Mackay poll has found more voters believe federal Labor would be the better economic manager by 39 to 36, with 25 per cent undecided.

Deputy leader Julia Gillard has told Ten's Meet The Press programĀ it's very good new for Labor.

A second poll makes clear the recent interest rate rise is to blame for the coalition loss of support, with 24 per cent saying they are more likely to vote Labor as a result of the rate rise.

I don't see how people can give Labor the nod when labor has not been in power for donkeys years. The economic period we are in at the moment requires experience and a big welfare spending labor government will drive us down the economic drain hole. People need to take care when deciding who to vote for- a Labor government will not by a miracle. stop the interest rates going up - no one can we are tied to what happens overseas and no one can predict that.

Kathy... So you are saying that Australian interet rates are tied to global economic conditions and Labor will have no influence? Are you therefor saying that Howard & Co can have no influence either? And where does that leave Howard and Costello's incessant "17% under Labor" claim? Just asking!

Cathy G is daft. Costello has had about 300billion surpluses to spend, yet the roads are rough, the schools falling down, it is impossible to give one's children a tertiary education without a vast expense, the old are indigent, our indigenous familiy has fallen into the Third world, and the ports are choked. We have a once in a generation opportun ity to build up our social and material infrastructure to the benefit of all. That opportunity is being wasted. Get rid of the present lot.

Kevin Brewer, Not all roads are federal responsibility, most are in the State and local Government domain. As for schools - well they are a State responsibility, It is true that the federal Government does give funding to private and religious schools thats because they receive minimal funding from the State, and the Constitution allows the federal Government to provide this sort of funding, and it won't change under Labor. I work f/T and study p/t and no one pays for my Uni fees but me.

Cathy. I'll help you here. OK Labor has not been in federal Government for what you call "Donkey's years." based upon that rationale then the longer they are out of a leadership role the more reason they should stay out. Hope your Boss doesn't feel that way if you want a promotion. You also seem to think that Labor is the "Big welfare spender." The Howard government is the highest taxing and highest spending ever. 9 out of 10 families receive some sort of Government assistance under Howard
