Campaigning in Melbourne, Prime Minister John Howard has been forced to move his regular morning walk to the Flemington Racetrack after protestors and publicity seekers yesterday hijacked his regular morning stroll.

Mr Howard usually likes to walk along the Yarra River while in the Victorian capital, but yesterday it degenerated into a circus.

The PM may be rank outsider with the bookies, but he showed most of the travelling press pack a clean pair of heels as he made his way along the 3200m Melbourne Cup track.

He even stopped to chat with trainer Bart Cummings as he passed the winning post.
