Australian musicians Ben Lee and Angry Anderson have joined a host of local personalities in urging the country to switch off their lights for Earth Hour.
In a bid to raise awareness about the effects of climate change, Australians are being encouraged to turn off their lights for one hour on March 29.
Last year, about 2.2 million people in Sydney took part in the event for the first time, which saw the city skyline blacked out from 7.30pm (AEST) until 8.30pm on Saturday March 31.
Musicians Ben Lee, Angry Anderson and Tex Perkins, along with actor Isabel Lucas and AFL player Shane Wakelin are among a number of stars getting behind the event this year and calling on the whole of Australia to take part.
"I'm proud to be from a country that is capable of looking at itself with insight, honesty and a sense of humour," Lee said.
"For this reason, Earth Hour has a uniquely Australian feel. It's about seeing a problem that needs to be dealt with, and taking some simple and enjoyable steps, to begin getting our planet to a better place."
Despite its success in Sydney last year, some business and environment groups have mocked the event as a gimmick, and as lacking in a broader climate change strategy required.
This year, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra and Brisbane are set to join Sydney and a number of other cities around the world in switching off.
