Nobel prize winner and climate change activist Al Gore today received his latest award, the Gothenburg Prize for sustainable development.

Swedish crown princess Victoria handed the former US vice president the award at a ceremony attended by more than 6,000 people.

"Like no other person, he has called on mankind to save the planet," said event spokesman Stefan Gadd from the event in South West Sweden.

Mr Gore also received prize money of one million Swedish kronor ($A177,000).
