Calls for tax cuts to go to stolen generation

12/02/2008 6:27:00 AM.  | Edwina Bartholomew
Prominent Aboriginal leader Noel Pearson is calling for part of the $31 billion in promised tax cuts to be spent on compensation for the stolen generation.

Prime Minister Rudd will open tomorrow's parliament with the apology but has ruled out offering any money to those taken from their homes.

Mr Pearson argues there's a legal precedent for compensation and the Federal Government should pay up.

Meanwhile, public schools have been ordered to fly the Aboriginal flag and stop classes tomorrow as Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apologises to the stolen generation.

The New South Wales Education Department has also instructed schools to watch a broadcast of the 'Welcome to Country' ceremony at the opening of Federal Parliament this morning.

"Here we go, here we go, here we go". Don't "tax cuts" go to people who work and EARN money? Rudd will never learn

This is such a joke! Tax cuts should go to those who worked and paid tax - it is just a simple common sense. Any tax cuts going to unproductive populations is not equitable as they did not contributed in the first place. Oh well, now we know why they said that there will not be any compensation required - they want tax cuts instead.

There is no stolen generation so there is no need to discuss compensation for them or to give them the savings made by the workers of this country to a group of people who are lazy and in the majority don't work for the good of the country just for the good of themselves and the activists. Get real Mr Rudd and stop trying to be a hero because you are just alineating the majority of those who try hard to make this country a great place in which to live.

Geez Valerie, You have got rid of the Stolen Children! How? Did you drive them off a cliff? Did you poison their Water supply? Did you give them poisoned flour? Did you shoot them for sport? And will you understand that you lot of HATERS are not the majority, you are a vocal minority who think that you are born to rule. I think in a democracy we can see the majority pretty clearly and it's not you. Please try to adjust.

Boy, so it's the GREEDISGOODITES who oppose the saying of Sorry, and I thought it was the RACISTS. Maybe it's just everyone without a soul. And some of these people have been saying that Labor shouldn't be making ME TOO tax cut's. WOWO and Benson, you keep running away from this question; What LAW did David Hicks Break? Come on, give us the answer this time instead of running and changing the subject.

Wiseacre Ordure. What on earth is wrong with you, If the moderator lets it in it's fine. I brought it up because you, Bolts and co had much to say about David Hicks but you run from this question. It demonstrates your intellectual cowardice and it is testiment to the value of your words. Now What LAW did David Hicks Break? And isn't this whole business with the sorry thing just wonderful. I am very happy about this, real progress starts with the first step. Anyway, just answer the question.

To Graeme Henderson - what LAW was broken by the welfare people "stealing" these children - I thought that these aboriginal children were removed in accordance with the LAWS of the time....

If there was evidence that money already being spent on indiginous affairs was effective I may consider this, but as of now, no way.

Interesting situation for Kev to "negotiate". He OK'd the NT "intervention", now the Aboriginal people are "demanding" it stop. "Intervention" could result in the next "apology". So "sorry" now may mean "sorry" again? Same indigeneous groups "demanding" recompense for the last "stealing". Now if we were all honest..we would agree that the past governments that "intervened" or "stole" did it for good reasons. Which is precisely what we are doing now with "intervention". Think about it?

The compensation should be put towards infrastructure such as schools and hostpitals. Any direct payouts should be done conditionally on parents sending their kids to school. Education of young indigenous people is key and educated children will persue their heritage with understanding and without the age old fear, superstition and fatlalism that so often leads to substance abuse in a white mans world.

I read what Noel Pearson wrote in the paper yesterday - I think what he said about compensation has been taken out of context - I don't actually think he was supporting giving the tax cuts to the "Stolen Generation" as compensation....but hey, it makes a much more sensational headline to say that he does. Perhaps reading the whole of his article rather than randomly selecting a line or two out of context would be a better idea....
