Australia's health watchdogs have joined the push for a worldwide blackout on junk food advertisements targeting children.
Health watchdogs from 116 countries including Australia are behind the campaign to crackdown on junk food advertising and tackle childhood obesity.
Under the code to be presented to health minister Nicola Roxon today, junk food ads on TV and radio would be banned between 6am and 9pm.
Using celebrities, cartoon characters and gimmicks to lure children into eating unhealthy products would also be outlawed.
Consumer group Choice says the federal government has a chance to show strong international leadership by supporting the push.
