Whalers attack Australia over dugongs

2/04/2008 10:53:00 AM.  |
apanese whalers have attacked the Australian government over its support for harvesting dugongs by indigenous hunters, further intensifying the spat between the two countries over whaling.

In a submission to the International Whaling Commission for its meeting in Chile in June, the Japanese will highlight the killing of dugongs by Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders.

The New Zealand-based spokesman for Japan's Institute of Cetacean Research, Glenn Inwood, said Australia was being hypocritical by supporting the harvesting of dugongs by indigenous hunters, while rejecting all "lethal use" of whales, The Australian reports on Wednesday.

"Japan subscribes to the international principle of sustainable utilisation," the spokesman said.

"The Australian government rejects all lethal uses of whales and yet supports sustainable utilisation of its own national hunting of the Dugongs.

Islander leaders agreed that too many dugongs were being taken for traditional food, The Australian said.

Environment Minister Peter Garrett said there was no analogy between Japanese whaling and the killing of dugongs.

The government was actively engaged in programs to protect dugongs, he said.

the dugongs aren't in any sancturary's nor are they protected under the world charter for nature, yet the japanese will condemn us for hunting them, granted we probably shouldn't , but didn't they just have armed illegal whaling vessels in a Australian WHALE sancturary and defying a federal court order...? a bit hypocritical of japan..... correct me if i'm wrong but i do remember Rudd saying he was going to be tough on illegal whaling... define joke , then laugh

I think the Japanese have us pegged. Under Rudd, Australia has become a hypocritical laughing stock of the civilized world. Dugongs do not hunt, and should not be hunted.

This is a traditional culture thing, like the Japanese say their whaling is, only difference is the Torres Strait islanders aren't travelling thousands of miles to hunt them.

Petre, Australia has opposed not only Japan's hunting of whales in the international waters of the Southern Ocean, but also hunting of whales in their own waters. I think it's this specifically which the Japanese are refering to here. Chris, There is nothing wrong with us hunting dugongs so long as we do so on a sustainable basis. This is Japan's point.

Indigenous people claim they have "traditional" rights to kill and eat dogongs even though they are highly endangered. This is stupidity as they could be lost forever! The Japanese claim they are doing "scientific research" on whale meat! Are they recanting? Are they claiming the same "traditional" rationale, or science? Japan is not killing in their own territories, but invading the Antarctic and the Whale Sanctuary, and flouting international and Australian territories too!
