Tensions are already high in Canberra, as hundreds of pro-Tibetan and pro-Chinese activists converge on the city centre for the torch relay.

There has already been seven arrests - a demonstrator taken into custody for interfering with an event.

The first four arrested were all males and were taken in for interfering with a major event.

Details on the other three have not yet been released.

Hundreds of pro-China demonstrators have also turned up to line the run.

Heavy barricades have been set up to protect the 16 kilometre torch route, and hundreds of police deployed.

Co Chair of the Torch Relay Taskforce Ted Quinlan says they're prepared for anything.

“We’ve got all of the security strategies in place that we think ought to be in place. We’ve got our continuances worked out but we can’t guarantee what the crowd size or the crowd behaviour is going to be.”

Kinda reminds of the security for the President of the US. I would love it were a comedy team from the ABC to do something foolish, now.

While I can understand the cause of the Tibetans in protesting against China I resent MY country turned into a battleground between people who, one would assume, is now calling THIS country their home. Would you go into someones home, as a guest, and start fighting with your hosts? Then do us the courtesy of behaving in a proper manner and not causing angst and disruption to Australiuan citizens who are just going about their daily lives. If you can't do that, then do us a favour by leaving.

A peaceful way of making a point is much better than interfering with torch relay!

I am not advocating violence however the time for peace is long past. The Tibetans have been peacefully protesting for decades. The Chinese Govt will never take any notice of them untill the world kicks up a stink and applies pressure. Free Tibet!

It is a shame that the Olympic torch relay has to be interupted. The torch is supposed to be a symbol of the olympics; games designed to bring together athletes of the world, united in a display of sporting excellence. However, the Tibetans and those that support them are taking this oppertunity to highlight the shocking injustices and humanrights violations that the Chinese govt. are perpetraing on them and others The world needs to be told and apply pressure upon the Chinese govt. FREE TIBET!

Grace, you know what happened in Tibet on 14 Mar 2008. I do not think Tibeans protested at that moment. They set fire on every shop, attacked innocent people no matter Tibetan or non-Tibetan. Some people died for no reason. I donot accept this way.

People seem shocked by the sheer number of Pro-China supporters and red flags, don't be. The hippies and the tibetan protestors have spat in the face of Australian hospitality and they've attempted to separate the Chinese nation, the oldest civilisation on Earth. Tibet was part of China before the birth of Christ, DEAL WITH IT!

Next time when Bush or Clinton come here. Stop them from bringing their own bodyguards. Our AFP will protect them.

To be fair for all minorities, Australia and China have to give back some of their territory back to indigenous people. Half of Tibet and Uriqur lands have to give back to their native people. Australia has a moral responsibilities to give back northern territory, Some part of Western Australia, Queensland to the people who lived there thousand years ago. Both Australia and China are bullies to the backward people. They took other people land and discriminate the indigenous people.

Australia population is 21 millions. Not 0.6 billion. I criticize both countries. If you are not happy go back to where you come from. It is a free country. America was bad too. I want them to give back some lands to Native people.

Stop complaining about other country with "no" HUMAN RIGHT when your one is sending army to support George W. Bush in Iraq! If there is 0.6 billion of people living in Australia (while China has 1.3b so far), i wonder how Australian government would survive if their people were still impoverished. China is getting better. She is trying very hard for her people. But we need time. Think how much time it took your country to grow up. would American give their country back to their aboriginal?ask
