Manchester United and Chelsea head into this weekend's final round of Premier League matches locked on the same number of points.

Here is how the 2007-08 title battle unfolded:

August

Reigning champions Manchester United stumble badly at the outset with draws against Reading and Portsmouth followed by a derby defeat at Manchester City.

Fears that Thierry Henry's pre-season departure to Barcelona would unsettle Arsenal are allayed as the Gunners start with two wins in their first three matches, while Liverpool also make a confident start.

Manchester City, now led by Sven Goran Eriksson, are surprise early pace-setters with three successive wins.

September

Jose Mourinho's increasingly bitter power struggle with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich finally comes to a head as the Portuguese coach quits Stamford Bridge after his side's spluttering start to the season.

Even more shocking than Mourinho's departure was the choice of the unheralded Avram Grant as his replacement. Grant was pitched in at the deep end as the Blues travelled to Manchester United for his first match and a 2-0 defeat only added to the turmoil at the club.

October

Arsenal showed no signs of losing their impressive momentum and moved into first place with a 3-2 win over Sunderland. United, inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo's goalscoring heroics, were firing on all cylinders now and reeled off four-goal wins over Wigan, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough.

Grant got his first league win at the third attempt against Bolton and finished the month on a high as Chelsea routed Manchester City 6-0.

November

William Gallas preserved Arsenal's unbeaten start as his late goal salvaged a 2-2 draw against United. Boosted by that escape Arsenal beat Reading and Wigan but United stumbled again, losing to Bolton.

Liverpool brushed aside Newcastle and Fulham to remain unbeaten as Spain striker Fernando Torres continued his impressive debut season at Anfield.

December

United motored towards the Christmas period in top gear, with Carlos Tevez clinching a 1-0 win at Liverpool. On the same day, Arsenal beat Chelsea 1-0 as Gallas punished a uncharacteristic mistake from Petr Cech.

A week later Arsenal ensured they would be top at Christmas thanks to a 2-1 win over Tottenham and the Gunners received a welcome festive gift as United ended their year with a 2-1 defeat at West Ham.

Chelsea looked anything but title contenders after a crazy 4-4 draw with Aston Villa left the Blues eight points behind leaders United.

A 3-1 defeat at Reading left Liverpool well off the pace as well and raised the possibility of Rafa Benitez being replaced after the club's American owners made a tentative approach to ex-Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann.

January

United showed no signs of a New Year hangover as they recorded five wins, including a 6-0 rout of Newcastle, to start 2008 in style. Sam Allardyce's brief reign at Newcastle had ended days before that defeat, with Kevin Keegan making a shock return to St James' Park as his replacement later in the month.

There was a first sign of Arsenal's fragile squad strength as injuries started to take their toll in a 1-1 home draw against Birmingham.

Chelsea were the big transfer window spenders with a 15-million-pound swoop for Bolton forward Nicolas Anelka and Grant's side responded with four wins.

Any lingering hopes of a Liverpool title challenge were erased after a winless month culminated in a 1-0 defeat at West Ham.

February

A draw at Tottenham followed by a home defeat to Manchester City, just days after the 50th anniversary of the Munich air crash, dented United's pursuit of Arsenal.

The London club responded with a 2-0 win over Blackburn that extended their lead to five points. Chelsea's goalless draw with Liverpool the same weekend left the Blues lagging eight points behind the leaders.

But Arsenal's season was about to implode. The horrific broken leg suffered by Croatia striker Eduardo at Birmingham was bad enough, but a late penalty that forced the Gunners to settle for a 2-2 was even more significant.

March

That result at Birmingham severely damaged Arsenal's morale and three consecutive draws surrendered pole position to red-hot United, who won all five of their matches, including a 3-0 romp against Liverpool.

Chelsea found top form with a crushing win over Derby followed by a 2-1 success against Arsenal that took Grant's team into second place.

April

Chelsea bounced back from a 1-1 draw against Wigan to beat Everton three days later and remain in the title hunt. But Carlos Tevez's late equaliser at Blackburn ensured that, with three games left, United retained control of their destiny. Michael Ballack scored twice to give Chelsea a 2-1 win over the leaders at Stamford Bridge and leave United with no room for error.

May

United steamroll an abject West Ham 4-1 at Old Trafford to move within one win of their 17th English title. Chelsea keep the fight alive into the final day with a gutsy win at Newcastle to set up Sunday's finale.
