Freaky Ledger doll replaced by nice Joker for Batman movie

11/05/2008 3:13:00 PM.  | Daniel O'Leary

Mattel, the American producer of the action figures for the new Batman movie, has pulled the late Heath Ledger’s original “Joker” figurine from production, claiming the toy was too scary.

The move has left collectors scrambling to buy the limited edition original before supplies run out.

Mattel has hastily thrown together a friendlier version they can sell to children, movie and celebrity site, collider.com, said today.

Collider.com said Mattel was expected to sell a strange “hybrid” doll, based on the movie and an animated version of the notorious Batman villain.

There were speculations in the media at the time of Ledger’s death that the dark and twisted Joker character had stayed with the Australian actor long after the film’s wrap.

Batman: Dark Knight is scheduled for release in July this year.

1) No pic of the doll for the artilce? That's some fine reporting, Lou. 2) An entire artilce written on the reporting of another website? That's some fine reporting, Lou. 3) No mentioning of sales data prior to the move to see if this was only done to drum up interest in a poorly selling item? That's some fine reporting, Lou.

The same joke, repeated three times in a row, and not even your own joke but a tired Fark cliche in turn ripped off of the Simpsons. That's some fine comedy there, knobchops.

Not to mention spelling. Your listing skills, on the other hand, are obviously top notch.

I think you are confusing the 5" and 6" lines for the Dark Knight. The Movie Masters are not the same as the 5" TDK line. The 5" line is aimed at kids have have a more 'cartoony' looking Joker. There are a couple of different versions of the 5" Joker. One in purple, one with a green jacket, and one in a TRU 4-pack. The 5" line were sculpted in house by Mattel. These can already be found on store shelves in the US.

The 6" Movie Masters line is more of a collector line and were sculpted by the Four Horsemen. These are also currently shipping, but have been a little harder to find since they haven't appeared at many Target stores yet (the Target toy aisles are due for a nationwide reset in the next 2 weeks). But they ARE out there and not as limited as scalpers on-line would lead you to believe. The 6" Joker WILL continue to ship in this line. I confirmed this today with Mattel. Their official response is: "The Joker figure from the upcoming Batman: The Dark Knight line will not be changed from the current version. Mattel does not discuss production runs but by the end of the summer collectors and kids will be able to add all the Dark Knight characters to their collection."
