Two campaigners for republican US presidential candidate John McCain have quit over close links to the Burmese military government.
The revelation that two senior members of his campaign had once worked for the Burmese authorities is highly embarrassing for John McCain.
His campaign website features a strong condemnation of the military government there.
One of the members, corporate lobbyist Doug Goodyear resigned after claims he was paid to boost the US image of Burma's military junta.
It was reported that in 2002 Goodyear’s lobbying firm used $A368,955 to represent the Burmese regime.
Goodyear today announced in a two line statement that he will no longer be continuing in McCain’s campaign.
"Today I offered the convention my resignation so as not to become a distraction in this campaign," he said.
"I continue to strongly support John McCain for president, and wish him the best of luck in this campaign."
