Will Smith's new private school to teach Scientology

19/05/2008 8:38:00 AM.  | LIVENEWS.com.au

Will Smith’s new private school, on which he has spent over a million dollars, will have at least six Scientologists on staff and will teach “study technology” - developed by L.R. Hubbard.

Smith's New Village Academy of Calabasas will have a curriculum featuring elements from ten different strands of educational theory, including Montessori and constructivism, as well as Scientology’s “study technology.”

The school’s website describes Study Technology as:

“An educational model developed by L.R. Hubbard, study technology focuses on three principles. First is the use of “mass” (manipulatives and hands-on experiences) to foster understanding – children need to see and feel what they are learning about. Second is the attention to the “gradient,” which ensures sure students master one level before moving on to the next. Third is the “misunderstood word,” in which students master word definitions and are taught not to read past words they don’t know the meanings of in order to understand completely what they are reading and learning. NVA uses study technology as an umbrella methodology woven through the subjects.”

Rumours have been swirling for months that Will Smith is now a fully-fledged member of the Church of Scientology, due largely to his close relationship with the cult’s pin-up boy, Tom Cruise.

But in April Smith publicly denied the talk.

"You don't have to be Jewish to be a friend of Steven Spielberg. You don't have to be a Muslim to be a friend of Muhammad Ali. And you don't have to be a Scientologist to be a friend of Tom Cruise," Smith said.

"I am a Christian. I am a student of all religions. And I respect all people and all paths."

"I don't necessarily believe in organised religion. I love my God, my higher power, but it is mine and mine alone, and I create my connection, and I decide how my connection is going to be," he added.

The Scientology curriculum has been banned in many countries, including Germany, because the teachings are seen as fundamentally flawed on an educational level, not up to traditional standards, or meant to indoctrinate children with Scientology religious beliefs. Many schools are unaccredited or deny their cult connections for this reason. In a Danish school, they have an alternate dictionary with the "real" definition of words. The real definition of the word "psychiatrist" is "an evil person."

We can only wish this information had been out before release of "I am Legend." Now that it is, without doubt Mr. Smith's career will follow the pattern of Mr. Cruise's only with far greater rapidity. Scientology is the new "self-inflicted death wound" to Hollywood careers, and the American public's response thus far, while slow to gain the facts, is fast to gain momentum once parents begin to realize their children are at risk from predators within their schools. Mr. Smith, shame on you.

Typical response. P-envy of people like Smith and Cruise who have proven careers. Not that you can see anything good anyway from a bigoted point of view.

At what? Where they're not banned, that is. Do they put out a better class of Scientologists, ones who have no friends outside the church, who don't know their multiplication tables, and who then are drafted into the Sea Org and work 60-hour weeks? http://www.exscientologykids.com/

Maybe you can find another 3 or 4 people tossed from Scientology or who just didn't get it.....to be the source of your 'information" (propaganda). I've been to a Hubbard School (Oregon) and the graduates are dramatically more well prepared to be productive member of society. Not that you'd care, you're too busy hating things you don't understand.

Stating that Scientology's academic technology present at: "Hubbard School (Oregon) and the graduates are dramatically more well prepared to be productive member of society," Is a complete and abject misstatement of fact. Hubbard "Technology" has no solid basis in fact; no empirical support; has been described by the German government as causing "depression, severe mental illness, and even suicide." "Well prepared" for suicide perhaps. An Academic / Professional Social Worker

Yoni, you are making it up. That's bull. I know study technology. How many teachers even ask students to use a dictionary these days, hmmm? So Scientologists use a dictionary, good on them. It's not a religious teaching! It's good sense. Mr Anonymous USA? You can't talk, you wear a mask to hide behind. At least these guys are up-front. Anyone wanting to know should find out for themself, www.helplearn.org I believe. Will is right, you don't have to be a Scientologist, to be a friend of one.

Sorry J D, but the church of Scientology definitely is not up-front about their beliefs. You can not walk into a Church of Scientology and ask them about their beliefs, because they will not tell you the truth. They are not allowed to tell you the truth.

I heard Tampa was a beautiful place, to bad your allowing a Cult access to your children. I strongly urge any parents to look into the practices of this pervasive organization, before you loose your children! This is one of the Cult's key way's they sneak into your community, under the guise of helping people. Don't fall for it. Just LOOK ONLINE!! This Cult has been stealing you tax dollars for decades. They are banned in other country's and have been thrown out of dozens of school system inUSA

Mr. Fraud. Your name says it all. Thank you for your non-nonsensical rambling of non-facts. I feel sorry for you, tied up in so much propaganda. You'll be happy to know that in Tampa, Scientology is expanding tremendously, as it is throughout the world. They help that has been provided by it's related groups is something you'll never accept. Too bad for the culture.

Educated readers see right through the cult mind responses. They clearly stand out because of their disconnection from access to critical thinking. Critical thinking would have yielded more intelligible arguments. Scientologists pay large sums to remain in a consistent state of hypnosis during which they are told what to think and say. This is why many of the comments have eerily similar wording and tone. This would be the 1st of many reasons to keep kids far away from Mr.Smith's school.

A percentage of the schools tuition will go directly to scientology for licensing Applied Scholastics, a cult front group that infiltrates public and private education systems to create additional sources of recruits and money. The school's goals are to employ numerous scientologists, promote their cult curriculum while indoctrinating and recruiting the students, and their families, into the cult. scientology is a dangerous criminal mafia style organization that must be stopped.

Does "study technology" make people vicious and angry when you challenge it, just like Scientology seems to? It's easily challenged because it was written by a third-rate science fiction writer who flunked out of his first year of college. Narconon, Crimonon and "study technology " all lead to joining the cult of Scientology except that "study technology" is targeted towards children.

jonon simple: if the CoS is expanding, why did it claim there were 15 million members worldwide in the 80s, and they now only claim ~8million? JD: most teachers do tell their students to use dictionaries... only, these dictionaries are established by very trustworthy, well-established and reputable establishments, unlike Scientology's administrative dictionary. (it's so hard to read, too...) Also, the Church is hiding behind the front of a religion, a cult/business operating behind.

WGAF?? Will Smith you're a tool, Tom Cruise you're an even bigger tool. Same goes for Kate Ceberano and any other scientologists. I have read the dianetics crap, blah blah blah its just as stupid and contradictory as the bible. I know my kids will not have either of these ridiculous doctrines forced upon them.

Interesting, most of those opposed to scientology schooling simply give information (granted, much of it is not favorable for scientology). The others (scientologists?) deny with no proof, promote scientology methods, and resort to insults. Why not actually try addressing some of the concerns of those opposed to it? Sheesh, and you probably sit around wondering why nobody likes scientology!

I for one am more than grateful that the Cult of Scientology is about to be banned in the country I live in. Belgium will be next, they're being taken to court for fraud by the Government there. So Europe will be first, and then finally the US will rid itself of this cancer. And to all you Scinos: believeing in Aliens is fine, just do it in the Freezone, where nobody is bankrupted or harrased. But you don't want to, do you? Because they've got you scared if you leave you will get pneumonia. lol

To any parents thinking about enrolling their kids ask a few questions. Ask to see the teachers credentials. Ask outright if any of the teachers are scientologists. Then read up on scientology and ask yourself just what kind of balanced teaching your child is going to get. Don't you find it odd that they feel the need to defend the scientology method of teaching but not the other instances? I have many grave concerns about this... my kids are the most important thing in my life and I do what I can to ensure they are not put in a dangerous situation, or into anything that could hurt them in anyway. Their education is so important, it is worth a half an hour reading the evidence that can be so easily found on the web. Do what is right for your kids and educate yourself before taking such a big step. I know it didn't take me long to find proof of scientology' wrong doings, not guess's or biases, actual hard evidence. It is out there and easy to access. Parents, be smart.

Montessori is rolling over in her grave that her method would be associated with a Scientology school, or a Scientology method. She rejected Mussolini, and she would reject the non-religious, pseudo-science of Scientology, a totalitarian organization that is out for your mind, your money, and to take over the world. Search for CLAMBAKE and read the real bio of Hubbard, "BARE-FACED MESSIAH," the sci fi writer who founded this cult in the 1950's.

I cannot believe that people will be willing to pay thousands of dollars for a place at a school that has 'study technology' developed by a raving loony who has no background in education or child psychology. This so called 'study technology' has no merit - children schooled in scientology schools often don't even achieve a High School Diploma! These celebrities lending their credibility to anything to do with scientology are irresponsible! Hopefully with time, they will see that the only thing they will achieve by this is irreparable damage to that credibility. I used to like Will Smith. Unfortunately, if he's promoting anything developed by the charlatan known as L. Ron Hubbard, I have lost all respect for him. Shame on you!

Will Smith is being used by Tom Cruise and the rest of the ponzi schemers that are the leaders of the cult of Scientology. His school will produce nothing but Rondroids who will be so brainwashed and emotionally backward that they will not know how to function in normal society once the cult ceases to exist shortly. The next protest will be on JUNE 14, 11 AM at all cult of Scientology locations worldwide. Bring a mask to protect your identity from harassing and fair gaming OSA agents!

Too bad these programs aren't accredited anywhere but in the mind of Scientologists. Too bad Scientologists believe we are reincarnated and have therefore already learned what we need to learn; we just need to recall it through auditing. In fact, most Scientologists stay in (an accredited) school only as long as local law requires. At that point, it is dropped in favor of Scientology based teaching or service to the church.

too bad. i truly liked will smith's stuff. Regardless of what the subject matter the school teaches, I find it saddening to find another celebrity turn hollywood televangelist. Tom Cruise was more likable as the ace pilot, not the couch jumping freak who condemns america on our ''pharmecuatical habit''. Will Smith was better as the young DJ / Actor turned Celebrity, now I'm afraid to find out what he's going to degenerate into, now that the Church of Scientology got their claws into him.

Go Anonymous! Masks are necessary because of Fair Game. Cult of scientology is a cult. Say goodbye to half of your fans, will smith, (who just claimed to be a Christian, not a scientologist) What's he going to do when he goes "OT" and finds that L. Ron called Jesus a pedophile? I read L. Ron's orginial OT's in his own writing and don't have phnuemonia and am still alive. All the proof is on the "twisted internet" as DM put it, right before he directed everyone to go to his cult's website!
