Patrick Swayze puts on a brave face in rare public appearance

27/05/2008 8:29:00 AM.  | Annika Burgess
Patrick Swayze was all smiles when he was spotted enjoying a basketball game, on his first public outing since revealing he was suffering from pancreatic cancer.

The dirty dancing actor looked a little gaunt, but kept a brave face while he watched the Los Angeles Lakers take on the San Antonio Spurs, with his wife Lisa Niemi by his side.

The 55-year-old was lucky enough to discover the life-threatening illness while it was in its early stages.

He has been undergoing chemotherapy since March, and doctors are optimistic he will beat the disease.

Dr George Fisher told People magazine earlier this year, Swayze was responding well to treatments.

"Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far.”

When reports of Swayze’s illness were first made public, there were rumours he only had five weeks to live, those allegations were shunned by Dr Fisher.

"All of the reports stating the time frame of his prognosis and his physical side effects are absolutely untrue. We are considerably more optimistic."
