There are claims school zones aren't being adequately policed with a handful of cameras catching almost all of those fined for speeding.
95 percent of the 125,000 school zone speeding fines issued in the second half of last year were recorded on fixed cameras in fewer than 40 locations.
A camera on the Hume Highway at Bankstown caught a staggering 19 thousand offenders, while another on the Pacific Highway at Lindfield caught more than 10-thousand.
The low number of fines in other locations has been blamed on restrictions as to where police officers are allowed to operate mobile units.
The Pedestrian Council says it proves covert cameras are the only way to ensure the safety of our children, which at the moment is at risk.
Far from conceding there may be problems with visibility of signs in those areas, Roads Minister Eric Roozendaal says motorists are given plenty of warning.
“All school zones are heavily sign posted, and the more vulnerable schools have the latest flashing light technology as part of the $46.5 million program from the Iemma government.”
