The Federal Government is pledging $500 million to encourage the local car industry to develop more environmentally vehicles capable of attracting overseas buyers.

The Prime Minister used World Environment Day telling parliament that the government would offer one dollar for every three invested by the industry toward greener cars.

Mr Rudd says the car industry needs to change.

"When all is said and done we don't just want a green car, we want a green car industry.

"An industry that provide secure high-skill, high-wage jobs by meeting the global demand for a wide range of green-house friendly technologies.

"An industry that is itself a model of clean, green production."

2020 a government fuel efficient car? Rudd has no idea. Last year France's postal service, La Poste, announced they will buy 10,000 all-electric delivery vehicles. In the UK, Royal Mail is trialling all-electric vans made by Smith EV http://www.SmithElectricVehicles.com Logistics company TNT (50,000 fleet) have so far bought 150 all-electric trucks from Smith EV. Japan is converting their postal service to electric asap. Nissan Subaru and Mitsubishi will release their first models 2010.

This is a rushed distraction from the negative coverage the government is facing: he's reading from a script like a year 4 kid doing their first ever presentation to the class. At the election they promised future thinking here's future policy. We're not doing anything until 2020! We'll make funds and put money in to them so that later on we can use them to do things (when the government might not be in power). But the people will have to vote them back in to make sure they keep the promises.
