Forging ahead: Wong uncompromising on environment agenda

The federal government is forging ahead with its plan to dramatically boost renewable energy, in what will be a double whammy for electricity prices.

Climate Change Minister Penny Wong released a paper yesterday, on how to reach the controversial target to have 20 per cent of electricity generated from renewable sources by 2020.

The government's Mandatory Renewable Energy Target is separate from emissions trading but both will cause electricity prices to rise.

The MRET has come under fire from some in the non-renewable energy sector, who say it's unnecessary, given emissions trading will soon be in place.

But Senator Wong is sticking with the renewable target saying it'll have a key role to play in helping to move to the clean economy of the future.

She's told 2GB's Philip Clark although she's aware the community may not have a complete understanding of some of the issues, there are some basic points on which to build.

"I have no doubt that this is a really complex issue and the policy we want to implement is complex and that's why we need a good dialogue with Australian people going forward," she said.

"It seems to me the two basic propositions that people generally tend to agree with is that climate change is happening and we want to do something about it."

That is absolutely correct. There is no proof at all of human-carbon induced Gloal Warming, only conjecture. Why are there no sunspots and why is the polar cap on mars melting. There is no humans on mars. There is certainly polution of our rivers etc.But Global warming is an excuse to increase revenue only and make people feel guilty that they have caused it.This country is in a cycle of drought and other countries are in different cycles too...IT WILL ALL END

I do not mean to be rude to Ms Wong,or take political sides. But there is so much disagreement surfacing about the cause of the alteration in world wide climate,I cannot agree with her at this stage and believe that alot clearer picture will develop in the next couple of years, because at the moment there is new evidence that the world has cooled somewhat, quite recently.

Until the government really understands the cause of climate change, and acknowledges it, nothing will be done. They are reluctant to endure the unpopular economic consequences of facing climate change adjustments and cut greenhouse gas emissions. With our historically high immigration rate, there is no way cuts can be made. Resource costs, such as water and energy, will go spiralling out of control. We need zero population growth, and then any reductions will start to make a difference.

Two things that I predicted at the end of the 1980's. 1. The sleaze bags in the nuclear industry would try to use Global warming to push their evil on the world. @. The big bad polluters would use Scientists for Hire to fight the bad fight. As for the scientists, they are responsible for many of the horrible types of death we get to experience these days, scientists are the and have always been the problem. Mr B, like all his mates won't take responsibility for the consequences of his greed.

I listened to the interview and she had absolutely no substance to what she said, she used words like - try, could, most of, etc etc. She is just playing RUDDS tune - its not popular to now back out so they keep on with a policy that has 2 sides to it and until we know the facts we should not be committing billions of dollars to it

Let's see, more than 100 years of Federation, and our governments have failed to meet the high standards of heath, education, public transport and law. So in a few years they are going to "fix" the complex flavor or the month problem of Climate Change. If they want to get people out of cars, how about making public transport tax deductable for those travelling to and from work. I don't think so! Or maybe the Mitsubishi Factory in SA could be a Technical Centre for an Electric Car.

If Hydrogen only Emits water as an Emission, then would we be creating more water for the Earth? Would this in turn increase rainfall? If the answer is yes, then we should be going in that direction. P.Mason, your right. The Mitsubishi plant should be used for a tech centre, we've certainly paid for it with taxes already. In fact there is room for Aust to start a new market on a different tangent to the HYBRID LIE. We have the talent here to dust all comers, if we give it a go.

If the energy is going to be renwewable, why the hke in cost? Eg, you dont pay for sunlight Ms wong! you dont pay for wind Ms Wong! Now if this is the source of your renewable energy why should we pay more? because the electrical suppliers inplace will raise prices to match the drop in demand from them, gutless gov. wont stop them , as it still provides taxes for them to swill at the trough!
