A new survey has found one in four of NSW police officers plan to leave the force within the next five years.
It's a startling statistic - police threatening to leave the force because of poor pay, bureaucracy and mismanagement.
According to a News Limited poll, of 1,500 officers, one in four is expecting to leave in the next five years - but that figure will rise if the State Government steps in and caps wages.
The move to cap wage increases at 2.5 per cent would see 77 per cent consider leaving.
Those going, plan to head interstate for better conditions or apply for high-paying jobs in other sectors.
But Commissioner Andrew Scipione says they're better off than their interstate counterparts.
“NSW police are certainly the highest paid in Australia…that’s where they should stay.
“My job will be to actually continue the work with government and the organisation to try to get the best outcome for our police – I want them to stay the highest paid in Australia, and I’ll do what I can to work towards that.”
