LATEST FEATURES

South Australian premier Mike Rann has cleared his frontbenchers to call Scientologists “bastards”.

Rann’s Education Minister, Jane Lomax-Smith, has featured on a video posted by anti-Scientology group Anonymous, in which she questions the Church’s tax-free status.

The video shows Ms Lomax-Smith asking the masked protesters: “Are you all related to someone who has been sucked in?”

“They should be taxed, the bastards,” she continues.

“They shouldn’t be tax-free, we’re subsidising them. I like your masks.”

The Church of Scientology has officially complained to the Premier, however Mr Rann has not censured his minister.

All religious entities should be paying taxes, just like every one has too. There is no viable reason why they shouldnt have to pay rates or taxes, regardless of WHO they think they are!!! Not payibng taxes??? given SPECIAL leave??? The bastards!!

Well done Ms Lomax-Smith for saying what we're all thinking, and well done Mr Rann for recognising this is the mole-hill that it is, not the mountain that the Scientologists would love to make of it.

Agree-there should be stricter guidlines as to what is a religious organisation. If you say that even the traditional Churches should be taxed OK but they should then close down all their Schools,Hospitals,Homes and all other charities and let the Government pick up the Tab.

I have been through several scientology audits as they like to call them. I believe this organisation to be unethical and a serious problem that needs to be looked into. there is nothing religious about them. They use sutble mind control excersises and develop a psychological dependence by making their newest members reveal all their deepest thoughts and secrets. I still receive mail from them after 30 years they shouldn,t be taxed they should be totally banned outright.

Wow - I never really thought about this before but why should a corporation that charges thousands for its services be given tax-free status? I don't think you can qualify brainwashing people for exorbitant fees as 'charity work' can you? I guess this is why the Scientologists try so hard to paint their scam as a religion - it allows them to claim some kind of tax break and gives them the 'religious persecution' card to play any time someone questions them. Tax the bastards! Go J-LO!

Fascinating. So the ALP get to walk both sides of the issue and not have a policy on it. One could only imagine what would have been said had the Liberal party responded the same way.

Scientology certainly should not be exempt from paying taxes - they operate like a ruthless corporation. They do these "stress tests" here in the city, where they tell you that you are bad and inadequate and only Scientology books and courses can save you. They try to pressure you into buying their materials. Compare this to other religious groups that actually care about people. Scientology is the only "church" that charges by the hour for so-called spiritual counseling ("auditing").

If I lived in Australi I'd vote for her. Today Tonight just did a piece on Scientology using Child Labour to run thier facilities. Just do a quick youtube search for "scientology child labour". Watch the viedo and tell me they shouldn't be taxed.

Tax exempt organisations are subsidized by the tax paying public and so their status should always be open to scrutiny and review. Tax exemption is usually granted to organisation, charities and religions mostly, that benefit society significantly; society is paying for the benefits by them not paying tax. The question is, given the weight of public opinion what benefit do they bring to society and what court has the right to overrule public opinion?

Firstly, I come from Adelaide - and I would like to assert that Mike Rann is hardly in a position to call anyone a bastard... and besides, all multimillion dollar corporation are dodging taxes - at least the scientologists do it with imagination!

I fully support the ministers right to speak freely and in this case I agree completely. Scientology is not a religion, offer only to those who can afford it and I have seen my friend's family broken up by the cult's "disconnection policy". Anyone reading this should google "Operation Freakout" "Lisa McPherson" and "Disconnection Policy"
