75 per cent of energy is being wasted: Climate Institute

Australian households are under pressure to improve energy efficiency after the release of a new report.

The Climate Institute says up to 75 per cent of energy used could be saved through simple cost cutting measures like better appliances or new light globes.

Federal Climate Change Minister Penny Wong says the government is already addressing the issue.

“We know that to tackle climate change we need a whole of economy reform to reduce our carbon pollution across the economy,” she told LIVENEWS.com.au

“That’s why the government has committed a billion dollars already in energy efficiency measures and that’s why we will be introducing a comprehensive carbon pollution reduction scheme.”

Earlier

Almost three quarters of energy used by Australian households could be saved through simple measures like a better light globe according to a new report.

A dependence on energy-guzzling appliances and petrol-powered travel has been blamed for the nation's poor effort in energy-saving.

According to a Climate Institute report, Australia is the third most energy hungry economy, behind Canada and the United States.

Households are being told they can save almost 80 percent of the energy used in their homes by using efficient appliances.

John Conner from the Climate Institute says there are a number of things that make us very inefficient.

“There’s been a dramatic rise in the number of appliances like TV screens, to Playstations and light fixtures…

“A lot of energy consumption is rising to those appliances, and we’ve seen very poor building standards within building, very inefficient buildings both at home and at work.”

Businesses too can make a difference - the report suggests they could do the same job they're doing now and still improve efficiency.

But the report could prove damning for the Government's Emissions Trading Scheme - the Climate Institute director says unless individuals pick up their game, there'll be no savings.

Yes Penny all is being done, still the lights shine at night in empty govt offices. Apparently no one has told you people about motion sensors, they're great for security, nullifying the NEED? for your offices to burn the light at night. Now what about open irrigation trenches? We going to see them get covers? What about emission reburning from smelters? No, we'll just tax the poor abit more! We cant after all make big bussiness do much, apart from buy carbon credits?

Federal labor Rudd and Wong, have killed the Solar Panel industry. I am not interested in the rhetoric about the voters must do this, and the voters must do that, and we will tax the voters even more than we are doing now. What are they doing about Nuclear NOTHING. And energy bulbs may save power, they are not environmental friendly, and the cost to make them? To say Australia is 2nd to the US in power consumption is just utter rubbish. We are less than 2% of emissions and declining.

The biggest waste is Office blocks in the inner cities! Start your campaign Ms. Wong on educating these people on how to use a light switch before telling me to turn off another light in my house. Have a look around you at night in the big cities. Is everyone still at work late at night in these multi level light shows?? beattie told us its for security, again learn about motion sensors!

Instead of targeting light globes, why not by law requiring that each new residence and business have solar power panels and water tanks for toilets and non-drinking water. Penny Wong is targeting the "gnats" of climate change while the "camels" or dinosaurs are being virtually ignored! She needs to address inneficient agriculture, population growth and renewable energy. So much tokenism and the main issues are avoided.
