Farmers face jail for stealing from the Murray

14/07/2008 7:17:00 AM.  | Gillian Cannon
Farmers who steal water from the struggling Murray-Darling basin could face fines and possible jail time.

The NSW government has taken the protection of the nation's food bowl into its own hands.

Farmers are being warned those who take more than their allocated water supplies could be fined up to $1.1 million and jailed for two years.

According to Water Minister Nathan Rees the hefty new penalties match what he calls the worst category of monetary and environmental crime.

“If you thieve water from the Murray-Darling River you are short changing Australians, not just the irrigator down stream or the fish in the river…It’s an Australian icon and it deserves to be treated as such.”

A $90 million surveillance project, including aerial coverage and satellite technology, will be introduced to keep an eye of how much water is being taken out of the river.

The proposal is awaiting approval by the Federal Government.

I find this comment from NSW.GOV. Hilarious!Who is going to be driving around and checking on usage from BORES? I suppose you clowns in office would assume that because its being pumped from thr groung it wont be from the MURRAY. This is typical of knee jerk govt. No Idea and no sign of finding any either. Perhaps the all knowing Garrett has a solution? I wont be holding my breath on it though! Kill off cotton farming Immediately and save 1/3 of water waste immeadiately.

Isn't it a sad situation that the NSW government is now threatening farmers with potential criminal prosecution for extracting water to grow crops. I am just wondering how they envisage these farmers are going to be growing these plants if not by the use of water.Maybe the NSW government has another way of growing plants that doesn't require water in the process. Morris do you have another machine that we can build to perform this task. After all your desalinization plant was terrific idea.

This is about time. Why the government hasn't being cracking down on this has baffled me. Oh that's right, it was a Lib-Nat gov. Not only should they be fined and jailed, but the individual or company should lose all of it's water rights. There should also be an investigation into proceeds of the crime. I also agree with the stopping of rice and cotton growing in the basin.

G.Henderson, surely you know the Nats/libs started off the buyback of water allotments? Surely you'd also be aware that in the years preceeding Howard, Hawk and Keating didnt even look at this issue?Perhaps instead of your constant sniping at the previous Govt on this isuue, being a Born Farmer you could put forth your wisdom on a plan to fix the problem?Apart from stopping the cotton and rice, i suggest blowing the locks it wont help get more water but may help flush it?

Nick Again, Are you saying that the Howard-Costello government saved the Murray River? All I see is spin and posturing while allowing business as usual. The current state of the river is not the result just of policies and climate since the election. Howard and Costello were great at pretending to act to protect the environment while really doing everything they could to destroy it.

It's 'environmental crime' that the Murray has been left for dead in the name of economic and bureaucratic expediency. How about tipping the resources into saving the bloody river? I can't stand these weak idiots, don't any of leaders have the spine to save our iconic river? I am throughly disgusted and disheartened.

I can not believe this. Turning farmers into criminals. The NSW Govt is trying to keep the Greenies happy again at the expense of NSW farmes. NSW Govt building a bigger goverment with more beaucrats and higher taxes. What the hell are the people of Australia going to eat if the farmers can not grow food. AGAIN THE SOLUTION IS SIMPLE PUMP THE EXCESS WATER FROM THE EAST COAST RIVERS INLAND AND SAVE THE MURRAY-DARLING AND THE FARMERS AND THE ENVIRONMENT. More Larbor Party socialist control.

Freddie, the eastcoast isnt flush with water just now, so where will this water come from to turn inland? When the rivers do run, the waters are needed to flush out there systems, this creates the prawning industry, as well as supporting a few other environmental needs. It just wont work. perhaps the epople who run the water board should be given a shake up, kill cotton and rice and cut back stock numbers to a viable sustainable figure. Mandate good farming practices.

Please keep a open mind. A half of one percentage of the water that flows into the ocean each day from the east coast rivers, will keep the Murray-Darling alive. It will not harm the eco systems of the east coast rivers. Storage infrastructure needs to be developed to store the excess water when there is heavy rainfalls. Why not drought proof the Murray-Darling. Is it to hard or is it because it is not of the lefts agenda. Please note Tassy is in the process of drought proofing its inland.

Freddie Patt, No one is turning farmers into criminals, this is about catching the farmers who are criminals, who are greedy self serving environmental vandals. The idea of turning rivers east has been looked at and dismissed more than enough times. It won't work and one only has to look at the Snowy River Scheme to see the long term damage done. There can be enough water for growing food if cotton and rice are axed. Take a look at the Owens Valley to see what stealing the water for LA has done.

Freddie Patt, Tassie is full on inbred red necks, their idea of left is far right. This whole idea of turning rivers around is dumb, it's been shown to be dumb that many times that anyone dumb enough to mention it still is going to be too dumb to ever understand. Dams are a problem, they silt up and become problems, no intelligent person would suggest them as a solution, of course there are plenty of dumb people who think that technology can fix what technology has damaged.

Graeme your rantings remind me of someone, who can it be. That's right Neal and Della Bosca their attitude is “I am right and everyone else is an idiot”, it must stop. All options must be kept on the table. The issue is too important. By the way, Australia has the best farmers in the world. Let’s work with them and not was time and money spying on the community.
