Pell tells pilgrims to fight their 'fat egos'

Young Catholics at World Youth Day in Sydney have been urged to struggle against their "fat, relentless egos" and commit to their faith.

Sydney Archbishop George Pell made the call after 140,000 pilgrims chanted, sang and danced their way to Barangarooo, near Sydney's Darling Harbour, for today's World Youth Day (WYD) opening mass - the largest celebrated in Australia.

Addressing the colourful crowd at the opening of six days of celebrations, Cardinal Pell said following Christ required struggle, sacrifice and self discipline.

"Following Christ is not cost free, not always easy, because it requires struggling against what St Paul called `the flesh', old fat relentless egos, old fashioned selfishness," he said in his homily.

"It is always a battle, even for old people like me.

"Don't spend your life sitting on the fence, keeping your options open, because only commitments bring fulfilment."

Dr Pell told the faithful, including 26 cardinals, 400 bishops and up to 4,000 priests, that many people had found their life's calling at WYD events.

His address was preceded by a welcome from Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who was clapped and cheered as he addressed the pilgrims in several languages.

"Australia welcomes the youth of the world to Sydney, Australia welcomes the youth of the world to this celebration of faith and this celebration of life," Mr Rudd said.

With chants of "Aussie, Aussie Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi"  in the background, Mr Rudd said it was a time to speak about all that was right in Christianity and the church.

"It was the church that began first schools for the poor, it was the church that began first hospitals for the poor, it was the church that began first refuges for the poor, and these great traditions continue for the future," he said.

"Christianity has been an overwhelming force for good in the world."

Mr Rudd said Australia had a proud Christian heritage, and he hoped pilgrims would be enriched by their time here.

Earlier, indigenous Australians took centre stage in the pre-mass celebration, dancing, singing and playing didgeridoo for the joyful crowd.

They followed a parade of flags and the arrival of the WYD cross and a large religious icon depicting Madonna and child, both of which have travelled around Australia for the past 12 months.

Dr Pell said he expected pilgrims would be uplifted over the course of the six-day Catholic youth event, which ends on Sunday with mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI.

However, he urged them to make time for quiet reflection.

"During this week we have every right to rejoice and celebrate the liberation of our repentance, rejuvenation of our faith," he said.

"And the young ones, I give a gentle reminder that in your enthusiasm and excitement, you do not forget to listen and pray."

To see Pell dressed up like a tart telling people to struggle against their fat, relentless egos, is a classic example of the hypocracy of the Catholic Church. He looks like someone who lost the struggle with his fat, relentless ego. This pomposity is absurd, and to all who follow him and his ilk, you are raving bloody lunatics. How many children died of starvation today?

Pharisee's and Saducee's, Fooling 1.1 billion people. the Church however has much to answer for. The Book Smoke screens details the Church, signing a deal with HITLER and handing over Huge sums of money to help the war effort for Him.? In this age we have the church covering up pedophillia of their believers. " For everyone that exalts themselves, shall be abased; and he that Humbles himself shall be exalted"," Jesus said, Why do you call me Good? for there is only who is good, GOD in HEAVEN"

Speaking of raving, bloody lunatics; Pell stands at the top of his calling in Australia with millions of followers, what's your achievement and following Graeme?

Edward Calleagh, Well, modesty means this is a trick question, but there are many people, most whose names I do not even know, who have been helped by a stranger, and many times that stranger was me. I sleep well knowing that even if I am not known by name, there are people out there who are fond of me for my deeds. I have no followers, I ask nothing in return, but I hope that those whom I have helped, will help others in need. I don't have a gold hat and fancy togs.

Graeme, you are a true Christian, thank God for people like you. You seek out and help people in need and accept people as they are, and for what they are, and no doubt, ask nothing in return.

Edward, You may say that I live by certain Christian principals, as do many people I know, but I certainly am not a Christian because I do not believe in the Jesus Christ fiction, or the religions that fable has inspired. Also, I do not seek out people needing help, but merely deal with what I come across as I go about my life. I believe in the truth and that causes a great deal of trouble in this world, but I'm no saint, there are many better than me. Love=truth=simplicity=God=beauty=Love=....

Graeme, thank God that you live by Christain principals, if it were not for Christ you would have no principals.

Well, 10 out of 10 for persistence Edward, but the similarity between my principals, and some of those reputed to have been endorsed by the man J C is coincidence really. I certainly did not come to them via Christianity, indeed a Jewish girl taught me a great deal, but you don't need to read the bible or listen to a priest to figure out that being helpful and considerate makes life more pleasant and productive. God or no God, doing what is right still works.

Catherine, Your Church school obviously didn't teach you how to spell "puerile", and you cannot even spell the name of your own suburb, Bentleigh. Go back to the school of the One "True" Church that keeps silent in the face of massacres and of child abuse, and spends half its time trying to cover up its own involvement. Your Pope lives in the Vatican which smuggled countless Nazi criminals out of Europe at the end of WWII, and now protects evil priests who abuse children. Sheila

Pell's denial of human-caused climate change is totally un-Christian and dangerous. Humans have fallen from Grace, and are quite capable of corrupting a once perfect Creation. We need a Church now, more than ever, to teach their people to take responsibility for what God has give them stewardship of - our planet! The days of "being made in God's image" and "multiply" are well and truly over! How will Pell guide his flock through climate change?

The one true faith the one true Church, catherine kennedy, you have been brainwashed haven't you. A real Christian would turn the other cheek so I don't know why a heathen like you would choose to defend this organisation. I think the Catholic Church hopes to breed enough Catholics that they can out vote god, they certainly seem intent of breeding up their numbers. May God save you from your stupid religion.

Seems if you quote biblical passage on this subject, then it must be in favour of the church? Twice I have laid out passages for our Catholic believers to have a look at and twice its been burnt? Perhaps our dear moderator is catholic? Again I say, god says" no idols" He who exaltrs himself shall be abased, he who is humble shall be exalted". Call no man father but me says GOD. Yet you call your priests Father? Read your bible, 2nd Timothy sums it up. Study to show yourself Aproved!

Mate, you are in Australia, get into Australian history. If your ancestors were pioneers you should appreciate and respect their hardship and sacrifice and dependence on the church.

catherine kennedy, you poor lost sole. Try actually reading your bible. Thou shalt have NO IDOLS! yet you call the POPE HOLY FATHER? Thou shalt call no man Father but me, yet you call your priests "FATHER". Do you even own a bible? Last i was in a catholic church, to have and read your own Bible was frown upon. The Arrogance you EXUDE is beyond belief. 1.1 billion Catholics, How many Muslims out there, 10+billion? maybe they may argue you on your thoughts? Your class and Grace is not in evidence

As an adult I do not follow the Christian faith, but i was raised a Christian and with Anglican, Lutheran, Presbytarian & Catholic grandparents, my exposure to Christianity was diverse. Out of all the Christian religions I do believe that the Catholic Church is the least representative of the bible, but who cares what I think, I'm not Catholic. Religion is about faith, & if the believers follow the sentament in the bible, that can only be a good thing for us all.

In my experience, Catholicism is no different in faith to the other Christian religions. They all agree on all the articles of faith. Where there is divergence is in the way of expressing worship. Protestants tend to make a point of not employing idols as intermediaries. However, Catholics pray directly to God too, and would dispute the assertion that they worship idols. I am not Catholic, but I admit that Catholicism is Christian.

Remember it is all about what happened 2000 years ago. The story have been translated and interpreted from different languages over 2000 years by many scholars, and translations still continue. Look at all the break-away faiths and their reasons, look at Henry 8 and his reasons. The whingers in these columns can be counted on one hand. It has been said that the poor will always be among us and, no doubt so will the whingers.

Pell delivered an important youth related message. It was ironic after Rudd had delivered his multilingual welcome. I am sure Mr Howard would have had too much class to try to over inflate himself in front of the world audience like Rudd. Were I Rudd, I would think the message aimed at me, but the that would probably be the Holy Spirit speaking the truth.

So where is Jesus? Two thousand years has past, he's late. Surely God can count? I was trying to picture Jesus on the cross dressed up like Pell was yesterday, it's better than trying to picture Pell dressed like Jesus anyway.

Reading all the hatred spilling out here makes me wonder if anyone ever researches their so called facts anymore, if they did they would find Catholic Priests make up the smallest percentage of pedaphiles involved in child sexual abuse. With over one billion Catholics, any sane person would know not all are good christians. Pedaphiles move among all of us, all walks of life. I am not Catholic but i feel for all the embittered empty souls posted here, I know God still loves you, and forgives you.

Pell can I suggest you talk to the drag queens in oxford st for some sensible dress sense, you looked ridiculous yesterday dressed like a woman dating back to the turn of the century. Fat old cows manage themselves better, we have some fabulous posters to show the little old lady with red shoes on when she arrives tomorrow. As you can see i don't believe and don't wont to believe in all this crap about jesus and crosses for goodness sake catholics live in the past..

I have never been a follower of my faith, yet it is sad to read all this comments and feel that there is so much anger out there. What does it matter what religion you come from if it makes you happy and it brings you peace what does it matter why can't people learn to respect others and not be so angry towards other human beings. The people who have put down other people and their beliefs go to show that in their growing up they were never taught how to respect other.
