Parry to lead Aussie charge at Royal Birkdale

15/07/2008 6:46:00 AM.  |
Australia's Craig Parry will lead out the 137th edition of The Open Championship after being drawn in the first group for the tournament starting later this week at Royal Birkdale.

He is grouped with Lucas Glover of the United States and Englishman Simon Dyson for the first two rounds, teeing off at 6.30am local time on Thursday (1530 AEST).

"What I did I do wrong?" Parry said jokingly.

"That's a great time and it's a real distinction to be teeing off first in a British Open," added the 42-year-old making his 18th Open appearance and third at Royal Birkdale.

"I won't be last out in the afternoon, so I'm thrilled."

Parry is among 18 Australians taking part in this year's event, making them the third-largest contingent behind the United States (42) and England (27).
Compatriot Aaron Baddeley is also an early starter, teeing off just over an hour after Parry.

He joins England's Justin Rose, who caused a stir the last time the event was played at Royal Birkdale in 1998 by finishing fourth as a 17-year-old amateur.

Five-time winner Tom Watson of the United States, who won the last of his titles at Royal Birkdale in 1983, completes their group.

Adam Scott joins 2007 US Masters champion Zack Johnson and recent French Open winner Pablo Larrazabal of Spain.

Geoff Ogilvy will tee up with Englishman Oliver Wilson and former US PGA champion Davis Love III.

Two-time Open champion Greg Norman lines up for his first major since 2005 just a fortnight after his wedding to former tennis star Chris Evert.

Norman is grouped with Sweden's Robert Karlsson and American Woody Austin.

Australian amateur Rohan Blizard, who last week qualified for The Open at The Hillside, next to Royal Birkdale, will tee off with Englishmen Jamie Elson and Jon Bevan.

Parry, who was eighth when countryman Ian Baker-Finch won at Royal Birkdale in 1991, played with Blizard on Saturday and was impressed.

"He's a great young player," Parry said.

"He doesn't need my help as he qualified for The Open and that's just fantastic."

Padraig Harrington begins the defence of his Open title alongside South Africa's Retief Goosen and Justin Leonard of the United States.

Sergio Garcia, who lost a play-off to Harrington for last year's title, will play alongside Ryuji Imada of Japan and American Sean O'Hair.

Players from 27 countries make up the 156-strong starting line-up, which is without the injured Tiger Woods, equalling the record for the number of nations represented set at St Andrews in 2005.
