Carbon emissions could soon be stored underground in our oceans and forests.
The controversial $5 billion scheme is believed to form part of the Rudd Government's response to reduce carbon emissions.
According to News Limited, the release of the Green Paper tomorrow will outline moves to capture greenhouse gases and store them in plants and soils, oceans and deep rock deposits.
And there are apparently numerous sites around Australia where the carbon could be stored - including Victoria, Western Australia and parts of Queensland.
The carbon sequestration plan also goes against the advice of Treasury, departmental sources have reportedly told News Ltd.
"This is another theoretical approach to a problem," a Treasury source is said.
"Not only is it very costly, no one knows whether it is a realistic storage solution for carbon emissions."
The push is believed to be against recommendations from Treasury that carbon sequestration technology is largely untried, and we should hold off until after the UN's summit on climate change.
