Store it in the ocean and forests: Rudd's carbon scheme

15/07/2008 7:48:00 AM.  | Gillian Cannon

Carbon emissions could soon be stored underground in our oceans and forests.

The controversial $5 billion scheme is believed to form part of the Rudd Government's response to reduce carbon emissions.

According to News Limited, the release of the Green Paper tomorrow will outline moves to capture greenhouse gases and store them in plants and soils, oceans and deep rock deposits.

And there are apparently numerous sites around Australia where the carbon could be stored - including Victoria, Western Australia and parts of Queensland.

The carbon sequestration plan also goes against the advice of Treasury, departmental sources have reportedly told News Ltd.

"This is another theoretical approach to a problem," a Treasury source is said.

"Not only is it very costly, no one knows whether it is a realistic storage solution for carbon emissions."

The push is believed to be against recommendations from Treasury that carbon sequestration technology is largely untried, and we should hold off until after the UN's summit on climate change.

And so the ship of fools sails on, ever stronger, and the Aussie flock follow Jim Jones Rudd into the innevitable "Jonestown" of history. Who cares what treasury think, what do they know anywhere? They are just another tool of the devil trying to shake our faith. We can't be wrong we have the messiah guiding us and we knowwwww that climate change is real we haveeee faith - hallelujah brothers and sisters.

Jo Stalin, it is time to stop preaching junk science and myths on every article and accept the fact that climate change (made problematic by man) is here. You also need to accept that we must do something about it. Whether or not this scheme is the answer is not my point. My point is something must be done and it is good to see a change from the irresponsible Howard government. What we need are true alternatives and investment in public transport (see WWW.TESLAMOTORs.COM or YouTube it!)

So we'll plant a gazillion trees at taxpayers expense, then when the trees are big and the new forest is raging, some wanker in Giovt will give them over to some MULTI-NATIONAL CORP. who'll then harvest them and reap BIG PROFITS. No doubt we will pick up the cost of removing said eyesore of forests we planted as well. KRUDD, dont mess with the ocean buddie, it supplies us with just over 70% of earths oxygen.Dont mess with it, its still alive to a point, keep out of it!!

Trees create both oxygen AND carbon dioxide. So saith the laws of PHOTOSYNTHESIS! Perhaps the lads at csiro can make up a new law for this thus appeassing master and releasing more cash for more folly and political matters. I do assume RUDD means that they're planning on planting NEW forests, or have his brain trust scientists come up with a way of injecting more carbon into existing trees......Idiots!!

Look what they have done to our economy in just 8 months. Now we are going to hand them the enviroment too? We really are mad!

Robert Smith, you must be living a fairy land! Enough said. Prime Minister Rudd, please don't f**k with nature, plant more trees if you want, but instead of putting money into unproven schemes like these, why not invest in renewal energy instead. I think our voices are pretty loud and clear, we just hope that you hear us.

Robert Smith. While I am not a fan of this current government (they are as conservative as John Howard's) it is stupid to say that Rudd is at all responsible for the economic situation. Australia, as a middle class power, can do very little to resist international economic situations. The only way we will resist this is if we happen to be insulated by the growth of China and India, which will coincidently drive inflation up. There is very little 'they' can do domestically to alter the economy.

Morgan Gibson-If the Rudd Government had been as conservative as the Howard Government, as you claim, we would not have been in this growing economic mess that we are in. The Howard Government faced many problems with the International and domestic economy but always managed to rise above it and keep the economy improving. Its odd how the apologists for Rudd blame international conditions for their economic failures but when it comes to the Coalitions success with the economy Rudd puts it all down to the resources boom. Well we still have the resources boom, stronger than ever, how come there are such negative sentiments about our economy?

This is the easy way out, he is trying to keep industry the same & come up with a way of making it better on the books...that it...this is a stupid idea. Why is it so hard for politicians to make the REALLY tough decisions. Forget carbon trading, forget carbon hiding, forget carbon!!!!!! Look at viable alternatives, its not rocket science, use the earth, capture solar energy, capture water, stop trying to put a square peg in a round hole. If govt wanted viable alternatives they would HAVE them.

Renewable energy is the only way to deal with this carbon crap. However our govs, have just spent big on building more COAL fired stations.(qld) Now seeing as how the Unions run the show how in the hell could KRUDD decomission them? Mining giants will of course be exempt from anything which prohibits them from major profits, there fore, we the little man shall pick up the slack, as usual. Point in case was the TRIAL of solar power generation. TRIAL, why, just do it!
