Mark Viduka back in action

16/07/2008 6:40:00 AM.  |
Mark Viduka is back in training at Newcastle United after making a better-than-expected recovery from a heel injury.

The 32-year-old striker, who managed only 21 appearances for United last season because of various injuries, has also hinted he could finish his career with the Magpies.

Viduka returned to training at United's headquarters, signalling he could feature in some of the club's pre-season matches.

An injury to his Achilles tendon in May caused Viduka to finish the 2007-08 English Premier League season a few weeks early.

He had also been plagued by hamstring, calf and ankle injuries throughout last season.

But looking ahead to the start of the 2008-09 campaign next month, Viduka is hopeful of remaining injury free.

"It probably didn't go as well as I wanted in my first season, but sometimes things don't work out the way you want them to," he told the Evening Chronicle newspaper in Newcastle.

"Kevin Keegan is a very good manager to work for.

"He's so positive and very knowledgeable about the game.

"It's a pleasure to work with him and I'm looking forward to that for the new season."

Viduka, who joined the Magpies on a free transfer from Middlesbrough, also suggested he could see out the remainder of his career with Newcastle.

"I've got this year left on my contract and then the option of another," he said.
