'S&M Barbie' sparking outrage among Christian groups

17/07/2008 2:26:00 PM.  | Jesse Perez

She’s gone through a range of changes in her long career, from Rockstar through to high powered businesswoman. But her latest incarnation, the S&M styled ‘Black Canary Barbie’, is showing off her wilder side – and it’s caused a big stir among Christian groups in America.

Kitted out with kinky fishnets, black gloves and motorcycle boots – the new Barbie is leagues away from her more wholesome look nearly 50 years ago, when she was first released.

The new toy is based on D.C Comics’ Black Canary – a leather clad martial arts expert who has a killer scream – and joins a bevy of D.C based Barbie’s. Previous releases saw Batgirl and Wonder-Woman with their own Barbification.

But although the release of the toy is a nod to classic female superheroes, it hasn’t stopped Christian groups from being outraged by Black Canary’s saucy outfit.

Religious group Christian Voice has stated: “Barbie has always been on the tarty side and this is taking it too far.

A children’s doll in sexually suggestive clothing is irresponsible – it’s filth.”

A simple solution: Don't buy the doll. Sure, we all want to be that moral street soldier to save the kids, but seriously... Just don't buy the doll. Why do people like to think they have the right to tell others what they're allowed to buy with their money. People have got to learn to mind their own business.

I have a friend who gave me some old dolls from her children a few years ago. Amongst them was the harshest looking barbie doll that I have ever seen...this particular barbie has a "tramp stamp" tattoo at the bottom of her back. After getting over the initial shock, I let my girls play with her. ironically over the years, that doll became the example of what my girls did not want to become, & they rouitnely make commentry about how disgusting tattoo's are. Never underestimate a child!

This isn't a doll marketed to kids, this is made for collectors. That being said there really isn't anything wrong with this Barbie that can't be found in many dolls that actually are marketed to young girls (take a look at a Bratz doll for instance), not to mention the roll models that young girls have to look up to. This really should be the last thing on a concerned parent's mind.
