Most Aussies in the dark on climate change: Poll

21/07/2008 6:24:00 AM.  | Kelly Fedor
Most Australians support action on climate change according to new polling, but many have no idea just what that entails.

The Herald Nielsen poll of 1,400 voters is the first since the federal government released its green paper on climate change last week.

It has found almost 80 percent of voters want action on climate change, and 68 percent are willing to pay more for goods and services if it means cutting emissions.

But six out of 10 have very little understanding of what an emissions trading scheme actually entails.

The politically risky policy hasn't had much of an impact on support for the Prime Minister with his personal approval rating virtually unchanged at 66 percent.

I dont believe the poll to be acurate, 1400 people out of 22mill? the scope for swing is somewhat enormous, the questions may be also stacked to reach an outcome aimed for. USA is Paying 926mill to Russia to shut down a couple of Nuclear plants, and go over to COAL fired? We do the hard yards so others benefit at our cost. We're paying more than a premium for our goods and Services now without being expected to fatten shareholders even more.

Instead of a complicated and hard-to-understand scheme, why not just invest in renewable energy and make solar panels mandatory for each new building, dismantle the livestock export industries and start a zero population growth policy. Along with re-vegetation and better public transport, these factors are the great contributors to greenhouse gases.

Yes and will continue to be kept in the dark by the greens,& labour's bureau of meteorology and CSIRO that are now completely discredited scientific tax payer funded establishments. When the facts seep through the hogwash, these two organs should have their funding striped and principled scientists given there proper standing in our society.
