Hundreds of pregnant women will protest outside of Blue Mountains hospital this morning, against the closure of the maternity unit.
The expectant mothers have been told they'll have to go to Nepean or Lithgow to have their babies, which are up to 40 minutes away, because of a lack of specialist staff.
One of the protestors Justine Caines has told 2GB’s Jason Morrison, 80 percent could be looked after by following the lead of Belmont and Ryde hospitals.
“Both those units have saved closure by opening as what we call ‘primary midwifery units,’ and that could have happened in Katoomba four years ago.”
Shadow Health Minister Jillian Skinner says the state government knew there was a problem a long time ago.
“Health Minister Reba Meagher has known for months and months that there has been an impending shortage of specialists to allow that service to continue, but she has done not nearly enough…”
