Climate ads are wasteful 'propaganda': Nationals

22/07/2008 11:16:00 AM.  |
A taxpayer-funded advertising campaign on climate change is a wasteful "propaganda piece", says Nationals senator Barnaby Joyce.

The Rudd government has launched a multi-million dollar campaign on television, radio and print to sell its plan for emissions trading.

Senator Joyce accused the government of hypocrisy, because it had strongly criticised the previous Howard government's Work Choices ad campaign.

"I've seen the ads and the ads are basically a little piece of Labor propaganda," he told AAP.

"There's a sense of (the government) being quite hypocritical in this after the tirade ... they had about the coalition's ads trying to promote Work Choices."

Opinion polls show most people do not understand emissions trading.

The government says the advertisements are part of a public information campaign.

To date, the ads illustrate the dangers of climate change, using images of chimneys and parched earth, but do not appear to explain emissions trading.

Senator Joyce said the ads contained no hard information about how emissions trading worked, and what it would cost households.

"When I've finished the ad I don't know exactly what my power bill's going to go up by," he said.

"If they believe in their policy they should first of all clearly describe it ... but clearly describing it does not require me to see it on prime time television.

"It's a propaganda piece."

Climate Change Minister Penny Wong has declined to say how much the ad campaign will cost, although media reports estimate the government will spend $9 million on it this year.

Commonwealth Auditor-General Ian McPhee approved the ad campaign on Friday, deciding it complied with new rules cracking down on government advertising which promotes political interests.

According to his review, the ads will stretch into October, with a fresh round of TV advertising planned for September.

Senator Barnaby Joyce has voiced what the majority of Australians are asking. What exactly does the rudd government have planned for us? how will this impact ordinary working familes? we keep hearing references to increased energy bills, naturally, and "tough times ahead" (for whom ? not the pollies, I bet) and who benefits from this? we cannot create a lovely environment just over Australia, Mr Rudd needs to look at a map of the planet to realise the atmosphere is global ( term he likes to use)

a "global" map, like temperature modelling, would give politicians the wrong impression: that the earth is flat and increased temperature is unquestionably guaranteed.

what would you epect of the party who's members and supporters have converted most of 60% vic.territory into desert and then when they do not have water and decreased rainfall they say there is no CC... THEY are resposible for desertfication and climate change in aus due to extensive forest removal over farming soil erosion and water restrictions to aussies.

Rudd's climate ads, Howard's IR ads. No difference. Rudd = hypocrite, Howard = leader, Rudd = follower.

Mr Bolton: Australia has entrusted the Major Reform Party (LABOR) to handle Climate Change before it's too late.Unless something is done you can throw your Economics 101 in the rubbish bin.Our and the World's Leaders need to address Climate change for the Future prosperity of the World.Howard had his chance but wouldn't do the Hard Political Policies as it would dent his Economic creditability.Labor will do the work and set us up so Australia might feel safe enough to vote Liberals back in.LOL

Dapto, the planet has cooled in the last 10 years and sea levels fallen. Stop blindly supporting Al Gore's retirement fund you fool - do some independent research. Think for yourself occasionally.

Dapto, don't get yourself screwed-up with the word Reform. It is word used by socialist to make the changes to suit their political dogma acceptable. Many of Whitlams reforms had to be abandoned.

We supposed to be an intelligent Country yet we have fallen for Rudd’s spin in large droves. How can it be OK to waste tax payers money on Climate issues that may or may not be true and it is not OK to advise people about something very real like Work Choices. Rudd and Swan have taken their eyes off the ball when it comes to the real economic issues of this Country and the so called 'working families' are the ones that will pay a huge price for their negligence.

Unchain my heart. Let us hope that they don't use a major poluuter in their adds the way Howard used the bloke who under paid young workers in his adds. The real hypocracy here is those who sat quietly through the Liberal-National campaigns without a whimper. I shall reserve my opinion until I see the adds, but given the complaints that no one understands carbon trading, something needs to be done to explain things.

Henderson - destroy the economy on an ideological, scientifically flawed whim. Sounds like lunacy to me. Then to spend $millions advertising it sounds worse than the Coalition IR ads (remember WorkChoices helped the economy, ETS will trash it). Al Gore is a liar.

Bolton, you would destroy the world for personal gain based on flawed economic principles and shonky paid for science, aided by your complete lack of morality, as your oft repeated support for corrupt business practices shows. The good thing is that you lot are just a loud mouthed minority, we shall simply steam roll you and your type because you no longer count. You shall not destroy the world so easily. Enjoy your increasing irrelevance, and accept the contempt we hold you in.

Please Mr Henderson, can you describe your proffesionalism on all the matters that you respond to,it would help a lot of us to know and understand how your comments are arrived at.The way you change people's names to suit your self do not make yourself sound at all very inteligent.
