Swan is fanning the inflation flames: Nelson

23/07/2008 6:26:00 PM.  | Richard Maxton with AAP

Opposition leader Brendan Nelson says the Rudd government's policy is to blame for high inflation figures that have dashed hopes for early interest rate relief.

Financial services charges, petrol, rents and health fund premiums were the main drivers of the inflation result in the June quarter.

Banks were the top offenders, with deposit and loan fees jumping 9.5 per cent in the June quarter, while fuel cost 8.7 per cent more.

But Dr Nelson says the government have not only failed to keep inflation in check, but much of their policies are contributing to the problem.

"After last year's promise to bring down the cost of petrol, groceries and housing, today's figures confirm not only that Labor has failed to deliver on this commitment, but that cost-of-living pressures are actually increasing as a result of (Prime Minister Kevin) Rudd's policies."

The CPI figures included a 6.1 per cent increase in the price of spirits.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics said this was the largest quarterly increase in the price of spirits since the series began in 1980 and predominantly due to the introduction of an increased tax on all pre-mixed spirits from April.

"The Rudd government has claimed the inflation genie is out of the bottle, well today we see the inflation genie is out of the spirit bottle," opposition health spokesman Joe Hockey said.

"Despite what the government says, their budget is inflationary and the 6.1 per cent increase in the price of spirits clearly shows this."

He said the tax on ready-to-drink beverages was an "ill-conceived" measure and nothing more than a $3 billion "tax grab".

Opposition treasury spokesman Malcolm Turnbull said upcoming increases in the luxury car tax and changes to the Medicare levy surcharge would further increase pressure on the CPI.

He said the coalition was confident the RBA would manage the inflation problem, much of which was generated by external factors such as increases in the price of fuel.

"We’ve seen in the inflation figures today the proof that the Budget, Mr Swan’s Budget, far from putting downward pressure on inflation has in fact added to inflationary pressures.

"It wasn’t global forces that forced him to go on a $3 billion tax grab on RTDs that’s put up the price of spirits overall, its added to inflation that’s part of the CPI.

"It isn’t global forces that have caused them to change the Medicare surcharge levy, that will in due course raise private health insurance rates.

"And it isn’t global forces that caused them to put a tax on so-called luxury cars that will also add to inflation just as we predicted it would at the time of the Budget.

"So, Wayne Swan is not an inflation fighter at all, he’s added upward pressure to inflation."

A flood of weaker economic figures in recent weeks had raised hopes that 12-year high interest rates had done enough to stem the inflation flow.

Some economists had gone so far as to tip a rate cut by the years end, but today's CPI data, along with data released by the Reserve Bank suggest those predictions may have been premature.

Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan said the new figures show Australia is facing a "long term challenge" to put downward pressure on inflation, and has warned the banks to carefully consider interest rate rises outside of official adjustments.

Mr Swan said the inflation issue is stemming from problems spread throughout the economy and there is no point in trying to ''sugar coat'' the problem.

"We inherited inflation at a 16 year high," Mr Swan said. "Now that didn't happen overnight, it's been building for a long time and it will take time to deal with."

"We inherited inflation at a 16 year high," Mr Swan said. "Now that didn't happen overnight, it's been building for a long time and it will take time to deal with." Never has a TRUER Statement been spoken.Now i know the Libs don't like it but they are the Facts,Inflation was building for Years and now they want to Blame Swan for their own mistakes.The general public knows about Inflation and thats why they voted Labor in to try and fix it;

Paul, again you have chosen to believe in labor lies & ignored the facts, which are: labor introduced new tax on spirits, failed to contain petrol & grocery prices (despite the promise), changed medicare surcharge threshhold whilch will further increase premiums, campaigning ETS which will further increase prices. Inflation during Howard as demand-ush from economic growth. Inflation during Rudd is cost-ull from increasing in general prices even when demand is slowing. Swan & Rudd are incompetent

Keating..what are you sniffing? Ever since Swan has been in the job he has (1) talked UP inflation, (2) talked DOWN the economy, (3) increased taxes and (4) encouraged the banks to INCREASE interest rates. ALL THESE THINGS ARE INFLATIONARY. In these latest set of numbers are "spirits" (increased by Swan), "cars" increased by Swan etc etc etc. Labor were not voted in to "fix it", they were voted in to deliver ON THEIR LIES...reduce grocery prices, reduce petrol prices etc etc

Costello. the master inflation generator. Nelson is getting frantic, he's simply scared that he's going to get the boot and he wants to be king. The real problem is that they know that Costello is the best they have, but his economic credentials have been shown to be a sham, and his leadership qualities were shown by his reaction to the election defeat. They should all resign, completely get rid of the Howard smell. Maybe they will get a good one come in.

Greame is still unwilling to admit his vote for Mr Rudd is hurting us all. He forgets the 96 billion dollar deficit Mr Keating left Howard and Costello to deal with. Taxing spirits, cars, medicare surcharge threshold, an insane Carbon Emissions tax, bought about by THEORY, no proof. Higher utility costs predicted by year close because of the so called Carbon Emissions, these arethe FACTS of inflation Graeme and Paul. I wont even mention the job losses that will eventuate in the very near future

The last time inflation spiked as much as this was 1995. How can THAT be blamed on the Coalition! Swan is now truly responsible for the crap that this country finds itself in.

Would any Labor voter please tell me specifically what is better for them personally since their regime came into power? My guess is that this will be a VERY short list. Note, I said "specifically" so let's leave out all the feel good rhetoric, like "we said sorry" or "we signed Kyoto"

My mortgage has not gone up, because I saw the light early and fixed my rate. I use my car less, and I am healthier for it. I live within my means, and I am better for it. I knew the economic boom that Howard and Costello were riding on was coming to an end with the US market sliding so I restrained my spending, I am better for it. I do not sit around and waste my life whinging about who does what, because I know I can't control it. Live within your means, you will be better for it.

Inflation has been fuelled by the rising cost of petrol and food and a rental market squeeze-It would appear that the Reserve Bank, egged on by Kevin Rudd and Wayne Swan, must be held partially responsible for the increase in inflation. It was their hurried and possibly politically motivated series of rate rises, late last year and earlier this year, that has led to the rental market squeeze and pain for mortgage holders. They should have known that the cost push effects of petrol and food prices could not be controlled by rate increases as spending on petrol and food cannot be described as discretionary.

Dear Fellow Posters:Swan is Fanning the Flames of Inflation by way of a BACKBURN to try and stop the HUGE FIRE of Inflation that Howard left us.All the fire trails were overgrown by neglect so natural defences were negated and many smaller fires joined together and was out of control. The Former head of that DEPT has been sacked and his Staff demoted.Mr Swan has been appointed to control and Limit Damage.LOL

So where is the Panic and whats your Idea of HUGE if we're still way off the old labor mark? My hope is that KRUDD doesnt try to show how good he By trying to surpass the old mark from Keating. and yes its fitting to be laughing at the end of your coment, most know it to be the joke it is!

Bolts,WO etc: To answer your question,I am worse off than 12 Months ago.I think most people are. However Unlike you I don't blame RUDD.I don't totally blame Howard either. The World is experiencing the same pain as us at this point in Time.So be a Honest Person and admit it's not all Rudds fault. Can you do that?

Posted by: Paul Keating, Dapto

Friday, 25 July 2008

DApto, Rudd is in the chair and HE needs to accept responsibility for the problems HE is causing. Thus far, EVERYTHING 9according to Rudd & Swan) is either Howard's fault OR the fault of "somewhere in the rest of the world". Rudd (according to Rudd) has caused none of the problems. I, for one, disagree. Rather than you seek honesty from us commentators, why don't you press for honesty from Rudd?

Posted by: Geoff Bolton, Lane Cove

Paul, yu have a short memory. I have said this before - I don't blame Rudd for causing inflation as some causes are overseas factors (eg oil prices). However I DO blame him for his inaction to cotain the inflation. He promised last year to "put downward" pressure on inflation, etc but so far has failed miserably. You can argue 8 months is not long enough but so far Rudd & Co look totally lost to me when it comes to how to control economy - just look at their inflation inducing economic policies!

In all the months since the last election, I have not found one person who will admit to having voted Labor! Not one! So when it all goes pear-shaped, as it inevitably will... don't blame me!

I have a few relatives who voted labor, most of whom were older, staunch long time, card carrying unionists who believe whatever they are told....a couple of them have recently said they will never vote labor again becasue of the combination of NSW disasters and because of Rudd's promises that they believed. They are not happy!

Big Dave, I vote Labor in state election(QLD) because the Libs/nats are a lost party at present but mainly due to the fact that Beattie did big heaps of good for us. Something i cant figure out with NSW.? In the Federal elections just past I went for a swing vote because i felt both major parties were loosing the plot? Family first got mine. I hope they didnt throw it to labor under the prefernce system. Deplorable thing to do with a vote IMHO. Sadder still is knowing i wasted my vote anyway.:(

We all know the governor has the power to do a lot but gutless to sack anyone. The only one that had the guts to do it was John Kerr when he ousted Whitlam! The whole system stinks as they all get in to line their pockets and are able to mislead the public and get away with it continuously. We can all say this isn't fair but really what is anyone doing about it.The whole bureaucracy is a joke - try and get anyone to really listen all they do is change and twist things to suit themselves.

Friday, 25 July 2008

There is something that could change, but i doubt that any governement would have the guts to bring in the changes....at the moment we have the trade practices Act that makes misleading and deceptive conduct an offence if it is done whilst selling goods and services. I want to make it applicable to politicians as well. The thing that annoys the hell out of is that not only can they mislead and deceive people legally, but they can flat out lie and the ONLY consequences are political!

Bolts: Rudd is a Politician!! Honesty and the Truth comes hard for them so i won't waste my time.Howard was a Politician also and he told a lot of PORKIES.I know they tell LIES BUT you only think Labor does not your beloved Libs. You need to confront the reality that they did Lie to US.

Paul Tweed, I think you are telling us that Rudd is also a liar & cheat and absolutely no better than his predecessor. On that point we agree wholeheartedly. Essentially he lied to get into power and now he is as bad as Howard. Yep, I can accept that.

As a small business operator we listened to all the hype about inflation rising and we increased our prices approx 7 months before we would normally do: I expect most small business did the same: Rudd ans Swan certainly encouraged us to do so with all the bleating they done about the sky is falling: As far as global warming is concerned Why Us. You have a room with 500 people in it all smoking, Seven people stop smoking, what difference will that make, not a sausage: We are being conned:

Good comment Minto, and no they wont. All we can do is wait the 4 yrs and then throw them out at election, and in 4 yrs a lot of damage can be done. Unfortunately we have only one other REAL alternative to govern the country. The answer is a REAL third party. If we were really smart we would have 3 parties , all of which could govern. Instead we have the useless preferential voting system, where we vote for an Independant etc, and they pass it to tweedle dee or tweedle dum. LOL@ clever country
