Beijing to allow protests during Olympics

24/07/2008 8:46:00 AM.  | BBC | James Reynolds
The Chinese government has relaxed its restrictions on protests during next months Olympic Games.

Demonstrators will be allowed to stage protests in three designated areas at public parks across Beijing.

According to the rules of the International Olympic Committee, no protests are allowed inside Olympic venues.

But in previous Olympics, specially designated protest areas had been set up outside venues.

This has posed a bit of a problem for Beijing, who was stuck with the predicament of whether to stick with Olympic routine or shut down protesters.

After deliberation, Beijing has now announced that it will follow Olympic custom.
