Canberra girl Mia Wasikowska is the latest Australian actress to crack the big-time in Hollywood with the news she is in final talks with the Oscar-nominated director Tim Burton.

The eighteen-year-old is touted to take out the title role in Burton’s version of the Lewis Carroll’s classic fantasy novel Alice in Wonderland.

Wasikowska was nominated for the Young Actors Award at the 2006 AFIs for her role in Suburban Mayhem.

The young actress, who has moved to the US, got her start in All Saints and has since appeared in Aussie films Rogue and September and is a regular in US series In Treatment.

She is also soon to star opposite Daniel Craig in the war drama Defiance.

Burton is best known for his off-beat films including Edward Scissorhands, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Big Fish and most recently Sweeney Todd.
