Senate committee to hear solar evidence

25/07/2008 9:03:00 AM.  |
A Senate committee will begin hearing evidence on Friday on the impact of the Rudd government's decision to limit eligibility for its solar panel rebate.

The government, in the May budget, imposed a means test threshold of $100,000 on each household seeking the $8,000 rebate to offset the cost of installing solar panels.

The decision angered the solar industry, which warned of job losses and company closures, and environmental groups who said it sent the wrong message about the need to reduce carbon emissions.

Coalition legislation, attempting to reverse the decision, has been introduced to both houses of parliament.

The coalition used its numbers to refer the Senate bill to inquiry by an upper house committee.

Liberal senator Simon Birmingham, a member of the standing committee on environment, communication and the arts, says since the means test was imposed most solar companies had reported losing at least two-thirds of their contracts.

"This decision has seen millions of dollars in business lost, with few new customers now signing up for solar panels, resulting in companies cutting staff numbers and ultimately the environment losing out," he said in a statement.

The committee will hear evidence from two NSW solar firms, the Australian Conservation Foundation and the Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts during a public hearing in Canberra.

Am curious to know what the cost to the planet is in the construction of said planels? Does anyone know what kind of "footprint" is left to manufacture the average panel? Now Breathe deep people, I am only asking.. not suggesting it should be banned Ok. Just curious?? have the enviro mentalists done their homework on this, or is it swept under the mat because its renewable? Bit like the Hybrid car thing?

Nick Off, doesn't matter what the footprint is, Rudd has effectively killed the solar panel industry with his ill thought through, detail devoid, ideologically driven attempt to screw average Australians.

Nick products are ranked according to their EROEI (energy returned on energy invested). Back in 2000 you had to have a panel for 8-10 years before it "paid back" to the environment what it cost to make. Nowadays thats dropped to 1.5 years (different technology). Panels last between 10-30 yrs so they do pay back their environmental cost. Problem is for people they cost a lot of money, so it takes many years to recover that cost in cheaper energy bills, thats why the rebate was important long term

Thanks Concerned. I've heard of some one in OZ who makes little wind generators, designed for home supply.(Sydney i think?) If memory serves the coast was estimated at around $20k??? I guess like the solar industry, this would decrease once mass prod. was geared. Govt assistance, would Perhaps, be a smarter Idea than Krudd flicking $35 mill to Toyota for an Industrial Diamond? He did say he had $500 mill for Industries leading the way. Perhaps they just have to have mass union members first?
