Brendan Nelson is behind closed doors with his party room colleagues, who are expected get behind the party's new shift on emissions trading.
Dr Nelson has been forced to back down on carbon trading and fall into line with his cabinet, a move which has put his leadership back into question.
Today, his backbench colleagues are having their say on how emissions trading should work.
Shadow frontbencher Eric Abetz says today is about climate change, not the party leadership.
“Some journalists are a bit too anxious to put everything into a leadership spectrum and put a spin on certain events,” he told reporters in Canberra today.
The MPs are likely to back the shadow cabinet's policy which is that carbon trading must begin no earlier than 2011.
We will know their position once the meeting ends sometime this afternoon.
