Costello lets $2m go and keeps leadership rumours alive

There is fresh speculation former Treasurer Peter Costello has his eyes on the Liberal leadership, after he apparently turned down a high-paying corporate job.

According to Channel Seven, Mr Costello has been offered $2 million a year to head-up the World Gold Council in the UK.

Deputy Liberal leader Julie Bishop dismissed talk of a leadership challenge.

"This is just speculation," Ms Bishop told the Seven Network.

Campaigning in South Australia today, Dr Nelson brushed off questions about his leadership.

"I will be taking the coalition through to the next election," he told reporters.

With Dr Nelson's preferred prime minister rating languishing in the low teens, some Liberals have been urging Mr Costello to challenge for the leadership.

Mr Costello is yet to reveal whether he intends to stay in Parliament, following the resignations of former Howard Government colleagues Alexander Downer and Mark Vaile.

Mr Costello is not expected to publicly announce a decision on his future until his memoirs, which he is writing with his father-in-law Peter Coleman, are released in October.

What he turned down 2mil a year? Obviously all those years sitting in Canberra have rotted his brain. Not only was he to much a coward to challange the leadership when Howard was on the nose, but now he wants to look a gift horse in the mouth. To think this idiot was in charge of the economy for so long. Just shows you how good the Hawke/Keating reforms were that Costello was able to coast along for 11 years doing FA and now he thinks he will be PM. Over Turnballs dead he will.

Russell Jones-Yes Russel my child there is a fairy land and you are living in it.Hawke/Keating reforms indeed-how come these great reforms are not helping Rudd now when all the economic indicators are pointing to disaster?Peter Costello didn't challenge John Howard out of party loyalty unlike the back stabbing that the Labor party engaged in- a la Hawke/Hayden, Keating /Hawke and Rudd/ Beazley.

Desmond, former leader John "feral abacus" Hewson today said that Costello "did not have the balls". He was a former leader of the liberal party no less! Yeah, I might know shit but if Hewson thinks Costello is gutless, then even you Desmond, would have to concede that Costello is a spayed gutless dog. Fear not on the economy, Rudd/Swan are the safe hands we need to dig the economy out of the inflation, interest rate rising hole dug by Howard/Costello.

Russell Jones-You poor thing- believing that Rudd and Swan have the faintest idea about the economy-you are very delusional and sinking deeper into failry land. As for Hewson is concerned he didn't have the balls to win the election that was there for the taking and he flunked his GST exam-he is just a cranky old has been. We don’t take notice of yesterdays men unless they can be constructive

If i were Costello, I wouldn't want to be Opp Leader until closer to the next election, you know, ride out the bad inflation times for a while as a lowly backbencher...and then cruise in after Rudd's taken a few hammerings in his term of office, from public spotlight.
