No plans to talk with Costello: Nelson

2/08/2008 1:00:00 PM.  | AAP
Federal Opposition leader Brendan Nelson says he has no plans this weekend to speak with Peter Costello to sound out the former treasurer's potential leadership aspirations.

Mr Costello returns on Saturday from a family holiday in the Pacific amid speculation Dr Nelson will face an immanent leadership challenge.

"No I don't," Dr Nelson said when asked by reporters if he planned to seek talks with Mr Costello.

"He is returning from a holiday, he has had leave, Peter Costello and I meet regularly to discuss a whole variety of things."

Dr Nelson said he was confident he retained the full support of his party.

"Yes, I most certainly am (confident)," Dr Nelson said.

Mr Costello is yet to state whether he intends to retire from federal politics and he is sitting on the opposition's backbench.

"Peter Costello has earned the right to make the decision about his future with his own family, in the best interests of both them and the people of Higgins," Dr Nelson said.

"I would be very happy for Peter Costello to stay on in the parliament, and if he chooses to do so, he will be immediately on the frontbench.

"But that's his choice, his decision, and he'll make it in good time."

Dr Nelson spoke with reporters before he was to address a special meeting of the NSW Division of the Liberal Party in Sydney's west on Saturday.

Poor Brengun, he knows it's all over but he has to keep up a brave front. He keeps saying that he will lead the COALition into the next election defeat, but everyone knows he's lying. Someone should ask if he will quit politics if he loses the leadership, just to see how confident he really is.

It is all well and good that you think Nelson should retire from politics, but what carreer will he do after? He was a doctor before hand but if he set up practice, how confident would you be in seeing him? His performance in politics shows Nelson as being a bumbling, muddle headed fool. Hardly the bloke you would wnat looking after your health. Must of had a rich daddy that bought him his doctor degree. (flame icon, if it was avaliable)

Dear Live News - why have you decided not to post my last entry? Does it not fit your electoral guidelines? Was it critical of your favourite contributor - Henderson? Please let us know. We can always go elsewhere. Or at least publish your censorship guidelines.

Whne will you all learn. The opposition will deal with leadership WHEN IT SUITS THEM. All the speculation is media driven. I suggest that the media (Live News included) should start scrutinising Rudd to the same extent that they scrutinise the opposition leadership issue. After all, Rudd is supposed to be running the Country!
