Teachers to get paid $100K+ under new scheme

4/08/2008 3:19:00 PM.  |
A new scheme would see more than 50 per cent of teachers classified as accomplished professionals and paid at least $100,000 a year.

A report's been released by the Australian Education Union, suggesting a set of national standards to assess teachers who want to be classified.

They'd be assessed by local independent panels using the national standards and a study the AEU's commissioned suggests one in two will make the grade.

The federal government's welcomed the report, saying it's working with states and territories to facilitate better rewards for teachers.

But the opposition says while it supports performance-based pay, the current standards set the bar too low.

Opposition education spokesman Tony Smith says performance pay should be for those who actually perform at the highest level.
