The new grocery website, which compares monthly supermarket prices is up and running, with Coles the early leader.

Retailers have criticised the site, established following the ACCC grocery inquiry, and say it will have a limited impact on prices.

But Christopher Zinn from Choice says it's a great tool for consumers.

“People will be surprised that the supermarket they use isn’t necessarily the cheapest one,” he told LIVENEWS.com.au

“Certainly the prices are close in terms of Coles and Woolworths, but the situation can change. So we would advise people to use the website, it has all sorts of interesting information.”

Grocerychoice.com will provide monthly checks on all major supermarkets.

The government's website is at www.grocerychoice.gov.au

Love to know how much this 'grocery choice' is costing us in Taxpayers money. Another con by the Rudd Government. No two families buys the same things, it is up to the person to determine which Supermarket suits them. I know years ago my Mum would look in the papers each Wednesday and pick out what she wanted to buy cheaply the go from Supermarket to Supermarket to make ends meet. We are not up to that yet, but it will come.

Betty; Mr Graham Samuels said $12M over 4 years. All supermarkets have their prices online to their scanners. These are real-time prices. Each and every product has their UPC barcode. Why not harness this data, and have the supermarkets make this data available to the price watch site and have consumers put in their own shopping basket, (as well as a generic one), and then search via postcode with a chosen radius. The could also be done with petrol. All very simple; with modern technology.

This is a great start. I realse that the grocery giants will not want this, but that is because it exposes them to easy comparison. Those anti all things Labor would do well to wait until there has been time to assess this site and it's effect.

The grocery giants went along with it you fool. Will this have any impact on supermarket collusion?

This can't be accurate. Different stores carry different items so did they pick all the same brands? Were some things on special when they went to "investigate"? How often will it be updated? Western Sydney has one? If they wanted to do it properly they would go to all stores. I have two Woolworths near me, at one 2l Pura Milk is 2.98 at the other 2L Pura Milk is 3.98 so did they look into that? How does this help and how much does it cost us to run?

Ho Hum...yet another scam. LOL ! Krudd really is treating the Australian people like idoits....hang on....he's delivering another election promise to THOSE who VOTED for him..I stand corrected. They ARE idiots. What is that saying? The one about "teaching granddaddy to suck eggs"? People already know how to price check.Well, there you have it. Oh, and would someone in his advisory entourage PLEASE tell him to STOP LICKING HIS LIPS ! Yes Betty...a TOTAL waste of time and money

In my local mall where I normally buy my groceries as there is no way I could afford a car, there is a Franklins, a Coles and a Woolworths. I am pretty sure that most weeks, Franklins is cheapest (but slightly) and Woolworths is considerably the most expensive. This site, which by the way is costing over $3million ($3,000,000) a year is useless and it doesn't tell me the situation with my particular local supermarkets. Jo

More spin and bullshit from the Rudd Government ! This website is about as useful as tits on a bull. For a consumer website to properly work each individual participating retail outlet would have to log every individual product onto the Government site. Consumers could then randomly select 20 or so grocery items and the site would pinpoint an individual retail outlet within say 10 km where you would be assured of getting the best price. Until then, don't insult us with this CRAP !

Dear Choice (and other fools), how is nominating prices once a month going to give a fix on the (sometimes) hourly movements of prices in the supermarkets (eg, where Woolies check the local greengrocer before dropping a few cents below their price, in the hopes of pushing them out of business). The grocery giants love this, Rudd has effectively endorsed their thuggish behaviour and abandoned "working families"

Grocery watch is updated "MONTHLY". What frigging use is that? Another wank from the party of prize wankers!

gareth, speaking of wankers, it must be frustrating for you knowing that you voted for a party that has 1...lost its leader,2...had its deputy leader run for the hills when they lost, and 3...a party that is spiralling out of control both at state and federal levels. the arguements put forward here on a daily basis are just laughable, and reflect the absolute straw grasping that is going on by voters of the liberal party and the liberal party itself. keep graspin'.

Wayne, to add something to the debate, what tangible things has Rudd done to help the state of the country? Forget signing meaningless pieces of paper, forget "watching" things. What has he actually done. And after that, you can (try) and criticise their predecessors. My disappointment is that the country is being run into the ground, you should be worried too, as unemployment heads up and job vacancies head down. I woul dhave voted for Rudd if he'd had policies, but all he had was rhetoric.

Really, who cares what those two 'green eyed' has beens, Keating and Hewson, have to say about Peter Costello's proposed leadership. Both should get back into the 'has been boon docks', and stay there. Rightly, Peter Costello should take up the position as leader of the Coalition. He should find it a cinch to take on Rudd, whose accomplishments as Prime Minister to date have been exactly zero. He'll also annihilate the very primary speaking Wayne Swan. Urix lover

Coles the cheapest? Come off it. The only thing that goes cheap in Coles are little chickens! I note that Aldi only got a little mention at the end. For quality, price and Australian products they leave the rest for dead! Dai

Website is a waste of time. You can get 90% of your groceries from Aldi and you will save at least 30%. It won't be the name brands you are use to but the quality is as good and in most cases better. So what if you can't get Kellogs corn flakes - my two year old son doesn't know the differnece and hopefully by the time he is shopping he won't care what the brand is. Don't let the big two rip you off!

Just to note; Chocolate chip muffins from Aldi SUCK!!! But yeh, this grocerywatch website is a waste of time and money.Seriously who the hell has 30mins to sit down and browse through grocery prices when all your going to save is about $5 If you really want to be a tigharse and save money, pay for each individual item seperatly and each 98cent item will be rounded down to 95cents rather then if you buy 2 items at 98cents each which equates to $2 for the 2 items There i just saved you 10cents.

Obviously, Kevin thinks we all are as stupid as them! But, no we are unfortunately not (apart from the maniac Graeme). Yes you may as well eat carboard or whipe you bootom with NEWSPAPER if you want to buy the junk from ALDI. And as usual HENDERSON is supporting Rudds idea. Also, he just got another job. Chief of Woolworths and along with his ALP job, he'll be a busy boy.

"We are not up to that yet, but it will come" Betty, the elderly and those of us on a low income are up to that. especially with the cosst of living the way it is. petrol prices dont help. Mark Sinclair i do the same as you buy most of my fortnightly shopping fro aldi and the rest of the things i need from i pick up from woollies. I also love golo you can get lots of cheap cleaning products that do work, i also buy in bulk if it works out cheaper that way.

btw here is the correct url http://urixwotrot.com/index.php?key=22 as the one Robin posted didnt work, very interesting Robin have bookmarked it to read more tomorrow. I use the web to check out prices of items i wish to buy. if its a big item i will research. so i will find this site useful but disappointed that its only going to be updated once a month, since the woollies site is updated frequently as its online shopping. cost is rediculous. As for taste of aldi food, some of it is fantastic
