Employment data brightens gloomy forecast

7/08/2008 8:32:00 PM.  | John Barrington
Gloomy economic conditions have not altered the unemployment rate, with thousands of Australians finding work.

For the fourth month in a row the jobless rate remains unchanged, at 4.3 per cent.

And in light of slowing employment growth in recent months, Treasurer Wayne Swan says the results are a positive sign.

"These employment figures are welcome, particularly given that we face the most difficult global economic conditions in 25 years."

And despite sales, profits and investments pressure on businesses Greg Evans from the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry says employees are working hard to keep their staff.

"They're able to retain staff and that's obviously a key priority."

Overall, 11,000 people joined the workforce in July, but that figure is offset by the unemployment rate rising to 480,000.

...wasn't Swan "lucky" that he inherited low unemployment? I wonder if he gives credit to his predecessors for that?

Just goes to show that Swan has no clue on how to run an economy, except for blaming previous governments. He and his puppetmaster Kevy, have been talking down the economy but it appears that things may be on the improve, despite all their efforts to stuff it. They are not finished yet though, wait until Kevin's carbon tax and new policy on immigration hits! That should bugger things for a couple of decades eh Kevin? Speaking of stuffups, isn't that new Grocery Watch web site a winner?

Waste of good money huh Paul. Be aware the employment went UP to 480,000, just the beginning. Oh well, give it a few more months and watch those who voted them in begin to grow silent as the struggle gets harder. Once the carbon taxes hit and the cost of living goes up even more, unemployment following, I guess that will be Howards fault too. Wonder how long they can hold that line, 8 mnths in, still using it. History repeating itself.

Typical Swan and Rudd tactic-blame the Coalition for all the perceived economic problems but keep quite about the positives. They hope that by keeping quiet that the people might give them credit for the positives-like Rudd claims all the credit for the budget surplus.
