Wong compared to Hussein in Murray backlash

7/08/2008 6:49:00 AM.  | AAP
The federal opposition has compared water minister Penny Wong to Saddam Hussein over her handling of the crisis in the Murray Darling Basin.

Opposition water spokesman Greg Hunt made the comment in relation to the unfolding ecological crisis in South Australia's wetlands and lower lakes, which are at the mouth of the ailing river system.

"Penny Wong and prime minister (Kevin) Rudd are set to join Saddam Hussein and the Ba'athists of Baghdad as only the second government in the world to have presided over the destruction of a RAMSAR-listed wetland," he told ABC Television.

Mr Hunt accused the Australian government of "an act of monumental environmental vandalism without precedent in Australian history".

The freshwater lower lakes are turning to acid because their water levels are so low.

Authorities are considering flooding the freshwater lower lakes with seawater to stop the acidification.

Critics have called on governments to instead buy more water from upstream irrigators to save the lakes.

This is symptomatic of Rudds so called 'long term plans' his 'vision' for the future. To be in a position to provide for tomorrow one must secure toady. Rudd has failed to address any of the contemporary problems and his handling of the economy leaves a lot to be desired.

Greg Hunt, silly $#&T. I traveled down to the Corrong in 98. The problems were obvious then. It is outrageous to blame Labor for this, The Murray was killed under the rule of Howard and Costello. They sat around and done nothing about the Murray because the COALition is anti environment, they want to destroy it everywhere they can. They stood back and watched greedy rural industries suck the guts out of the M-D basin because the Nats are Nuts. Time to shut down all the irrigation.

Graeme Henderson of Darling Downs is STILL blaming the last government. Question Graeme, what has been done by Labor, both State and Federal after the recent talkfest about buying back water rights to attempt to correct the situation? Not one thing! Of course you would overlook that point because you are so wrapped up in the past. Are you related to Paul keating? As for shutting down all irrigation, you should stand for parliament. You could give Peter 'what am I good for' Garret a few pointers.

Paul Hussey, Penrith. Well aren't you just the cleverest. Of Course after 12 years of Howard - Costello anti-environment policy it is fair enough to blame Labor for the demise of the Murray. Bunkum you fascist fool. It is too late now to save the lower lakes from salinity, and the farmers down there are doomed because of the evil inaction of the Libs. For Silly Hunt to now say this is so hypocritical and sleazy that it is beneath contempt.Lake Alexandriana is huge, where would you get the water?

Paul H. First you need to add ignorance into the equation whenever Henderson is involved. Its Lake Alexandrina (so he got that wrong!). I guess because he's an old fart from Darling Downs - he feels some kind of earthy association with the project! And finally, ANYTHING that involves Liberal (State or Federal) is always wrong in Henderson's deluded world. Most of us either (1) ignore him, (2) humour him or (3) wind him up (I'm pretty good at 3!)

Wong, if we take sea water and put it in the lakes and the murray, wont this just add to the salinity problem when it all dries out again? or am i just having a blonde moment. And these libs here really you have to admit howie really didnt do anything to help the situation, he never had a green thumb and probably never will. if you cant admit that you are lying to yourselves, i mean, come on! As for garrett come on get your act together, cant stand people who are all talk and no action
