A man has been arrested after he allegedly stabbed another man multiple times in a shopping centre in Sydney's southwest.

The 39-year-old man was taken to hospital after he was stabbed three times in the back and stomach in a car park on Smart Street in Fairfield yesterday.

A 32-year-old man was detained by security guards at the scene before being arrested by police and taken for questioning.

He's since been charged with maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent - he's been refused bail to appear in court again today.

Inspector Ralph Deans from Fairfield Police says a row broke out over a car parking spot on Smart Street.

“Two men had a confrontation that resulted in one of the males receiving several stab wounds.

“The wounded man received three stab wounds to his lower abdomen, in the area of his kidney.”

The alleged victim remains in a serious but stable condition in Liverpool hospital.
