Phoenix sign a Muscat

8/08/2008 9:52:00 AM.  | AAP
A-League club Wellington Phoenix have signed Australian defender Manny Muscat as a replacement for the injured Vince Lia.

The 23-year-old gets his first A-League contract after playing two matches for the Phoenix in the pre-season cup.

Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert said those games, which included the Cup final against Melbourne Victory on Wednesday, won on penalties by the Victory, were enough to prove Muscat was good enough to make the move from Victorian club Green Gully to the top competition.

"He only had two sessions with us before we played Sydney and he played extremely well. Then he backed that up with a pretty comprehensive performance," Herbert said.

Defence is an area of concern for the club with Lia's knee injury ruling him out for the season and Tony Lochhead trialling with English Premier League club Middlesbrough.
