$86,000 fine for following Iemma’s granny flat advice

11/08/2008 8:48:00 AM.  | Victoria Owens
Sydneysiders are being urged to ignore an idea from the government to rent out granny flats in a bid to ease the housing shortage.

The idea has backfired, leaving Premier Morris Iemma red faced for suggesting it.

One man who took on the advice has been slugged an $86,000 land tax fine.

Shadow planning Minister Brad Hazzard says the government hasn't changed the laws to allow for the idea to work.

“He’s more interested in getting the spin out as soon as possible rather than fixing the problem.

“Going and building a granny flat as Morris Iemma suggested may actually get us an $86,000 bill…most people would be wiser to stay right away from granny flats until Mr Iemma does change the law.”

Another case of the Labor Government (un)wittingly adding another crisis to an existing crisis. What next?

oh my....what a shame Mr Iemma...what a shame. I guess we can now confirm "your not the sharpest tool in the shed". How embarrasing !

Benson & co.I reckon if you lot were fish in the ocean you would be on my dinner plate without me baiting a hook.Where is the facts in this "story"?Do you seriuosly believe that since Iemmas announcement someone has built a flat, lodged a Land Tax rtn, been found out and then been to court and fined. All in about two weeks.I have seen cleverer donkeys than you Liberals. Why doesn't this convicted person have a name?

So Lance, are you telling us that Iemma's idea was good and well thought through? Or are you saying the story is a beat up (like most of the anti-Coalition beat ups that appear daily)? Are you just getting a bit touchy because the left is being criticised? GET USED TO IT. We're onto the case!

Apparently the owner of the property has to prove that the main building, on the property, is his regular place of residence. If he does this then he will not have to pay the Land Tax. So we don't have enough detail about the case and why the Government has assumed that the owner did not reside at the main building.

Benson I made no comment on the validity of Iemma's plan. I dont really feel qualified to comment on it.But what I can recognise is rubbish journalism.I also recognise gullible people and you are one.You can safely pidgeon hole me as a anti -Liberal and a Howard Hater rather than a Labour supporter.Any time you want to debate an issue based on facts I will be there in an instant. As for Brad Hazzard running around with this story is embarrassing for someone seeking election.Wake up!!!!

Freestone - do you have ann opinion? I do, and suggested (having read the story - albeit crappy journalism!), and that Iemma had produced policy on the run. I am apparently not alone with that observation. I'm just surprised that as soon as anything even mildly critical of Labor emerges, then you all jump to criticise the source. BUT, when that useless source is critical of the Coalition, you seem to consider it as indisputable fact. I'm not a Labor hater, I just support good government.

Benson, If you support good govt you will be happy federally. As for Iemma I agree he is not the sharpest .But what is the alternate. The current whinining ,harping,no policy Liberals are unelectable. These donkeys tell us about late trains.Do you seriously think a change in govt will speed them up?The only way to fix trains is to get rid of Lewocki and break the union stranglehold. But which party wants to force a strike to do it.Neither!!Get serious and tell me all good Liberal policy and funding

Monday, 11 August 2008

By the way Benson. Please tell me the last 3 beatups on 2GB that were critical of the coalition. Also tell me where I posted anything relating to them being facts. The one thing I dont do is quote 2gb on anything without verifying it at least 3 other sources. You need to get up to date with facts rather than dribble .Even my old mate Harris has made a sensible comment on this subject.Time for you to wise up.

But, Freestone - do YOU have an opinion or do you just regurgitate left wing propaganda? I can't find anyone in NSW who will own up to being an ALP supporter! Anyway - not to worry, by 2010 and the 2011 - it will all be over and the Coalition can get things back on track (federally, and locally!). By the way - you are in good company....Hendo likes you!

Don't Worry Lance, Benson only has opinions, they are never supported by facts, and they are all anti-labor irrespective of how stupid it makes him look. It is ridiculous to claim that the person affected in the above story built the granny flat concerned because of what Iemma said, that is ludicrous, but don't forget that ludicrous is all the biased Lib supporters have. The facts are someone got caught breaking the law, that has to be their fault surely, but they cowardly blame someone else.

Freestone like you I can identify rubbish - and the Iemma is rubbish, along with all his Union mates. They have driven this state to the edge and now everyday come up with some hair brained scheme to get out of the mire. I don't care if the idea is legal or not the mere mact that we have the elected leader of our state suggesting the best way out of the housing crisis is to build a granny flat is a very sad joke. How about releasing more land or cutting some of the crippling state taxes?

Monday, 11 August 2008

Thanks for your support Hendo. Its like shooting fish in a barrel debating these Liberals. Now another donkey wants a piece of the action.Sinclair, at no stage did Iemma say that granny flats was "best way out"iemma said it would help ease the situation.Releasing land without infrastructure on the outer fringes of Sydney has no merit. All it will do is lead to more traffic burdens and more foreclosures.Maybe we can release some land around Maryland

At long last, we've found Iemma's support base... Lance Freestone, Cambridge Park & Graeme Henderson, Darling Downs. I think there's a perfect intellectual match there!

Cmon Benson 3 coalition beat ups.Where are they ? Show us all that you are not just a gibberer.Show us that you have an opinion based on fact.If you cant put up shut up and join "PAKISTAN SUSAN" as another totally discredited Liberal on this forum.

Freestone... (1) "Costello may have to fight for leadership" Aug 10, (2) No plans to talk with Costello: Nelson Aug 2, (3) "Nelson holding meeting on emissions trading as pressure builds" July 30, (4) "Opposition are "gutless" on climate change: Swan" July 28..the list is endless. All media "beat ups" of anti-coalition stories. Leadership, leadership, leadership..all stories raised by the Government..not ONE raised by the opposition. Story ends. We're over it. Some journalists are waking up

Like most premiers, the idea of actually doing something state funded to help the problem is, of course, not in the mix. granny flats? Try cutting back immigration. try getting some State housing up and running, to benefit those in need.(Eg. unemployed/pensioners. not the 2 parent working class.) Typical of all our pollies, looking for some one to come in from the private sector to pick up the issue and Tab. Morons in high places!! :))

Lance, if Benson was a fish he would be a minnow. The NSW Labor gov is pretty bad, but still better than the opposition. We are stuck with Anna Blight and her bunch of mongrels who I am at war with these days, but have you seen the LNP, I think that's the Loopy Ningnong Parade led by "The Borg"! It's pathetic, Australia is suffering because it lacks a viable opposition party because the people who support these right wing Greedisgood parties are idiots. What to do?

Settle down Benson even LIVE NEWS has to eat.I reckon my unpublished gems would exceed twenty.Leftist bias on 2GB eh!.I 'll bet the moderator will be proud of that accusation.I 'll deal with my opinion of Morris first.Morris leads a govt of average talent proportions. The opposition is talentless. The biggest problem with state govts is FUNDING.A undisputed fact is that under Howard hospital funding fell from 48% to 41%.Why would that be? To get a state Liberal govt in.In other words Howard cont.

Posted by: Lance Freestone, Cambridge Park

Monday, 11 August 2008

Freestone, yep - I see ...EVERYTHING is of course Howard's fault (NOT). You idiot. At least TRY and get some reality in your perspective.

Posted by: Gary Benson, Blacktown

Monday, 11 August 2008

Howard was happy to see older people die for political advantage rather than properly fund hospitals during a boom period.People born before WW2 & ealier built this country & deserve better.Howard cut funding right across the board in a vain attempt to ridicule states and reduce service delivery.Brainless morons like you Benson do not understand how the world works.Lets hope a grub like Howard never leads the Liberal party again.Next I'll deal with your alleged beat ups.

Posted by: Lance Freestone, Cambridge Park.

Monday, 11 August 2008

Lance, your comments show your extreme low level of intelligence. Hospitals are run by state not federal government. Your friend Iemma and his predecessor Carr are hopeless at running the state. Saying they (together with with all otherlabor politicians) are idiots is simply an understatement.

Beat ups eh!1)Of course Costello has to challenge .No beatup there.2)this story has direct quotes from Nelson,no beatup there3)Nelson got rolled on his ETS model,no beatup there4)Opposition gutless is an opinion piece by Swan containing direct quotes,no beatup there either. The problem with you Benson is your medication you need to halve it or double it.Anyway thanks for saying the moderator is making me look good.Could also be that your ordinary.Quit while your only this far behind.

Benson, I still don't see where you have acknowledged that the Granny Flat that is the center of this story could not possibly be blamed on Iemma's recent statement. This is someone seeking to circumvent planning laws. Before you hark on anymore how about you deal with that. And Lance, if Benson was a fish and you ate him you would be crook, he's definitely off.

Monday, 11 August 2008

W.O.Turramurra you are a complete basket case.Public hospitals are run by state govts but are funded 50/50 federally under the present arrangements and have been for more than 20yrs.If you dont know that you idiot go and check with your local Liberal stooge.Thats the trouble with you Liberal bloggers you dont understand how funding works and still think Menzies is Prime Minister. So W.O(Wipeout)go and join Beaten Benson & Pakistan Susan and hand in your bloggers badge you gibberer.

Tuesday, 12 August 2008

Lance, you are a complete basket case. We all know (except idiotic labor morons like yourself) the main issues in state hospitals (also roads, trains, etc) are NOT funding but mismanagement! With incompetent labor governments in power there is no light at the end of the tunnel unless these useless politicians are kicked out of the office. The proof of this is now labor has power federally but has the hospital services in NSW improved? Man, you guys are so low in your IQ.

Wiseacre Ordure. I see that you are weighing in with your pointless abuse again because you see Benson copping an intellectual flogging, AGAIN. Would it be too much to ask for you to make an intellectual point that has relevance to the topic at hand, or at least to the argument,( you right wingers can't actually debate anything because you haven't any policies or any ideas). All you do is abuse people and make irrelevant, mostly, or at times incorrect statements, to hide the Lib problems behind.

You all talk left and right, well news time people, we dont have lft/rght anymore. Bi-partisan politics is all you get.Labor stealing from Libs nad Libs stealing from Lab.The whole show has become a joke. While you all squabble about G.Flats your Power is being sold Off. Rail next. I suggest that the silly person who built the granny flat send the bill to Mr Iemma. since he thinks its his fault. See how far that gets him. I would love to be able to get a granny flat planned and built in 2 weeks, must get his guys numbers off him/her. Sometimes people throw ideas around, doesnt mean you go out and do them without doing the math. but maybe victoria you could look into this a bit more

Obviously this was bad journalism, in the first article they spoke of changes to Captial Gains Tax, which is controlled by the Fed Govt. Then here, they infer that the granny flat was built due to what Iemma said, which is obviously incorrect. The point remains that as current laws stand a granny flat on your principle residence makes you subject to land tax if you make money out it. Even if they change the
