Senate commitee to hear from small grocers

11/08/2008 7:43:00 AM.  | AAP
A Senate committee will hear today just what small retailers think about a plan to make supermarkets display the unit prices of groceries.

A national mandatory unit pricing scheme was one of the key recommendations of an ACCC inquiry into grocery prices released last week.

While the Rudd government is considering the best way to introduce it, Family First senator Steve Fielding has already introduced his own legislation to parliament.

He wants supermarkets to display unit prices of anything they sell by measure, weight or volume.

The association which represents independent grocery retailers, and the Queensland Consumers Association will give evidence today.

More crap from KRUDD n Co! Now we wont get to buy cheaper by buying Bulk. This is just another way of taking us to the cleaners. Saddest of all is the Contempt shown us by aour Govt here. Are we ALL meant to be so stupid , to not see this? With a large family we normally got better buying power,. not Anymore. :(

While as a rule I try to buy locally, my closest supermarket, 35kms, in it's endeavour to keep it's prices matching the big chains, resorts to buying the cheapest fruit and veggies. Sick to death of getting home to find that I have to throw out bags of potatoes, oranges, apples etc, I now do my shopping at the big chains 80kms away. Paying more I can handle, but paying more for rubbish I will not do. The small players are not only affected by economies of scale and the tyranny of distance.
