Smoking bans in pubs and clubs have done little to reduce air pollution.
A survey of more than 40 venues in Sydney and the Southern Tablelands shows smoke pollution is still five times over the World Health Organisation's recommended limit.
The readings, taken from before and after the new smoking laws were introduced, show the air quality as "poor".
Employee and health groups are now calling for an urgent review of the legislation to ensure workers aren't exposed to harmful second-hand smoke.
