Murray irrigators to get more water

15/08/2008 10:10:00 AM.  | AAP
River Murray irrigators in South Australia will get more water from next month with a decision by the state government to lift allocations from two to six per cent.

River Murray Minister Karlene Maywald said while 300 gigalitres of in-flows to the River Murray system were recorded during July, the majority flowed into tributaries in NSW and Victoria.

The improvement to the shared resources was estimated at just 35 gigalitres.

"Unfortunately, these in-flows to interstate tributaries are not part of the water resource available for sharing between all states," Ms Maywald said.

"At the moment we are just not seeing the rain falling in the areas that will contribute in-flows to the shared resource, which is what we need for South Australia to have access to more water."

Ms Maywald said the government would continue to update allocations to irrigators on the 15th of each month.

"Maximising the amount of water available to irrigators as early as possible in the season is essential to help producers plan their irrigation for the year," she said.

Why is the South Australian gov doing taking more water out of the river before the lakes have been sorted out. The SA premier is busy calling Q'landers terrorists while they are just giving it away? This doesn't make sense so what amI missing here. If more water is sent down what will they do with it. What water restrictions have been in place in Adelaide?

The Murray Darling food bowl has brought a lot of prosperity to Australia with all the exports, and it is the farmers who probably get the least! However, we need to have more sustainable exports and not agriculture. Our agribusinesses are too water-expensive. The dairy industry is a major export industry and the major user of water, for the cows and for their crops. We need to export more intellectual property, not agriculture.

Viv, I'd rather the Darling FOOD bowl and the Dairy industry, get the water they need than the COTTON or RICE industry. I'm sorry but i dont see how the Dairy industry uses more water than Cotton or rice?... Now apart from cows drinking and washing plant, where does dairy consume so much water? How much water is wasted per Tall building(sky scrapers)? There are many areas we could tighten b4 our food bowl.
