Toulon to offer Bulldogs SBW settlement

15/08/2008 6:00:00 AM.  | Dominic Brock | rugbyleaguelive.com
Sonny Bill Williams has bowed to legal pressure and withdrawn from the Toulon team for a pre-season friendly match yesterday, as his new French club prepares to offer a financial settlement to the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs and the NRL successfully sought an injunction against their star walkout which could have seen Williams jailed if he again played for Toulon, the club he sensationally abandoned the Bulldogs for three weeks ago.

Toulon pulled Williams out of their starting lineup for the friendly match against reigning champions Toulouse, with the New Zealand international instead watching the game from the stands alongside friend Anthony Mundine.

Toulon’s president Mourad Boudjellal said the club did not want to “inflame the situation”, and was now striving to arrange a settlement similar to a European football-style transfer fee.

“A financial settlement is going to be found at the beginning of next week,’’ Boudjellal told News Limited.

Bulldogs boss Todd Greenberg has stated the need to try to uphold the rest of Williams’s five-year contract with the NRL club, but admitted a financial settlement could put an end to the crisis.

“Potentially down the track that’s where it might head,’’ he told reporters this week.

“I think we’ve got some time to go before we get to that though, I think we’ve got to stick solid with the sanctity of the contract.’’

Soooo - the bulldogs aren't willing to stick to their guns to make this a landmark case about the sanctity of a contract - they are willing to sell out on their beliefs as long as the money is right. sonny was right all along - its all about the money !

But of course. Anyone who thought the CLUBS actually want to be restricted by a Bound Contract, has rocks in their head. Sanctity of contracts, Gallop you make me laugh No doubt, the STRUGGLING Bulldogs will want his term paid out..eg they get the money he was meant to earn...LOL. 2 mill $ for nothing.... the French Billionaire will toss it over like a fish on a plate..Sadly, the lawyers invovled will also take a mill. SBW will do well in union, much better than in league.

This is exactly what i said yesterday - why doesn't someone pay the contract out, then he is free to do whatever he wants. I'm glad to see the French club are doing the right thing, even if SBW isn't.

It us not as simple as just paying out his contract. The bulldogs would be entitled to damages as well. They should be claiming for lost revenue from sponsorship and marketing. SBW brought this on himself and should be made to pay from his own money. He had a legal contract to the bulldogs. If he acted like a responsible person and spoke to the club something would have been worked out that was best for both parties. He has been immature and needs to learn what he done was wrong.
