Aussies seek redemption in the pool on Day 8

16/08/2008 9:52:00 AM.  | Jen Watt
On the second last day at the Water Cube, Australian swimmers are aiming to leave disappointments of the past week behind them as they take to the pool.

Eamon Sullivan has a final dash for glory today, as the 22-year-old aims to reverse his fortunes and take out the 50m freestyle sprint.

Sullivan hopes to turn the tables on Frenchman Alain Bernard, who snatched the 100m crown from Sullivan's fingertips on Thursday, outswimming the West-Australian by just 0.11 of a second, relegating him to a silver medal.

The 50m freestyle final will also feature 29-year-old Queenslander Ashley Callus, who made a surprise qualification in what will be his last Olympic Games.

Libby Trickett and Cate Campbell will also compete in the women's 50m freestyle semi-finals today.

Trickett was outpaced by German Britta Stephen by 0.04 of a second in the 100m swim as the world record holder and race favourite missed out on what would have been her second individual Olympic gold medal.

Trickett, who also holds the 50m freestyle world record is looking to set the pace for tomorrow's final when she swims her semi-final today.

Andrew Lauterstein will race the 100m butterfly final with an outside chance of a medal as he takes on a field that includes American superstar Michael Phelps, who is chasing a record equalling seventh gold medal in a single Olympic Games.

In other events to be held at the Beijing Pool today, Meagan Nay and Belinda Hocking have finished third and sixth fastest repectively for the 200m backstroke final and are both considered to be genuine medal contenders.

Teenage relay hero Kylie Palmer also competes in her only individual event when she contests the women's 800m swim.

What an extremely sad society we have become when it is not considered a wonderful effort to win a silver medal at the Olympic level . Our swimmers are giving it all and getting beaten by a finger nail touch and instead of applauding them ,we keep expecting them to redeem themselves and do better. I for 1 would like to congratulate the whole team just for getting there to represent our country. Thankyou for the enjoyment we get from watching you.
