Labor stalwarts are sticking by NSW Premier Morris Iemma despite a new poll showing that the Coalition is well ahead in the popularity stakes.

The latest snapshot has Barry O’Farrell's party at 40 percent to Labor’s 33 per cent.

But NSW Transport Minister John Watkins has told 2GB’s Chris Smith, the Carr government was behind in the polls early on, before recovering.

“People tend to forget that things come and go polls do come and go and we’re not in a good position at the moment,” he said.

“But I think we’ve got two-and-a-half years till the election and if we put our policies together and get the infrastructure out there that the families of New South Wales want, then I think we can turn it around.”
