Poll shows federal Labor would be re-elected

22/08/2008 8:15:00 PM.  | AAP
A public opinion poll shows support for the Rudd government has notched up slightly and would be enough for victory if an election were held now.

The Roy Morgan poll shows support for Labor is up 1.5 percentage points to 47 per cent while the coalition is down 2 points to 37.5 per cent.

Support for the Australian Greens and the independents increased by half a percentage point each .. but the independents slipped by one percentage point to five per cent.

On a two-party preferred basis support for the government climbed two points to 57 per cent while the coalition dropped to 43 per cent.

Nearly 1,800 people were polled in early and mid-August for the latest survey.

Can't wait for the double dissolution election on alco pops. I hope the Hanrahans who post so much twaddle on this site will take note of this. An increasing majority of people prefer Labor.

Don't you just love a democracy, we get to keep both sides of government in the same house & all doing the same thing-----stuffing Australia .

In that case Labor, call an election now....

And I will second this - call a federal election NOW! Let's see whether Australians have woken up or are still silly enough to believe in their dream of being better off under Rudd!

Of course calling an election now is daft. What has to happen is for Brengun and his mob, and old Xenoponia to block the Governments legislation in the Senate so that the Kiddy Booze tax is blocked. Then the Government re introduces the legislation unchanged and we get to see how brave Brengun is. A Double Dissolution election is quite different from an election and it will give the electorate a chance to deal with those who seek to exercise power against the wishes of the electorate.

Kiddy booze tax was a con Graeme....everyone knew that...as soon as KRudd mentioned it the prices went up....no consultation ...nothing passed in legislation....like petrol and interset rates.....a butterfly flapped its wings in Canberra and a typhoon happened in the rest of Australia....don't worry Graeme, things willright themselves very soon ....and the little man will be shown up for what he is....

Alex, I totally agree with you, although I believe we have one party far worse at destroying the country than the other, their past record speaks for itself. While ever we have only 2 major parties, who have many very similar policies today, we can only hope we get the lesser of the 2 evils. Didnt happen at the last election, but give Rudd another year and a lot more pain for the 'working families' , and we might get back to the party who does the least harm. Polls like this mean nothing.

PM Rudd can I suggest you through a tax on all other booze and hit them hard, don't stop at the kids stuff hit all boozers in the country which is most people by the sounds of things..All that extra tax would be great for the country.

g.maybury, not all, I have never drank in my life apart from the odd toast at a wedding etc. I am quite capable of living and enjoying myself without a substance to help me. I do however agree with you about ALL alcohol. Tax one, tax them all. I have to say it doesnt make for a nice evening out as a non drinker, observing the effects it has on otherwise normaly sane adults. All things in moderation, especially drugs that alter the brains normal function.
