Flood of sex attack allegations at Bathurst school

26/08/2008 8:14:00 PM.  | Joel Labi

A major police investigation is underway into dozens of alleged sex attacks at a Catholic high school at Bathurst in the NSW central west - some dating back two decades.

The Seven Network reported as many as 40 people, including children, have come forward to police claiming to have been sexually abused at St. Stanislaus College.

Police have launched a major investigation with charges expected to be laid soon," Seven said.

The attacks allegedly involve former and current teachers and charges are expected to be laid.

It is understood more details have emerged this evening, but police are refusing to go public with details until at least tomorrow morning.

This is absolutely outrageous. To say that there are current teachers involved is an absolute falacy. This is all concerning 1986 allegations that have only more recently been brought under the spotlight. I happen to attend the school (and board), and to say that there "current teachers" may be involved is simply disgusting.

I don't know what is happening at Bathurst. But I do know that there could be cover ups and we would not know. I am happy to see what comes out of the investigation. I am unhappy at what I see is the culture of cover up that I think is part of the NSW government.

As an oldboy of Stannies I can state that in 1967 there were cases of sexual abuse in my Year 10 (Form 4) class and these were internally addressed. The staff member instantaneously evaporated within 24 hours. However one of the victims was not able to address the issue and found difficulty with dealing with many of his class mates because of the stigma. However, my maths master and science master were outstanding teachers and priests, and I would not have my career without their work.
